At the Diemould exhibition taking place at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, Bangalore, India, from 6-9 April, Renishaw (hall 2A stand B38) will highlight a range of process control solutions that help tackle the increasing drive to lean manufacturing, from new technologies for pre-process machine calibration, to on-line and off-line post-process measurement. Following the acquisition of R&R Sales LLC in 2012, Renishaw has developed an extensive new range of modular fixturing designed specifically for co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs), vision systems and its Equator™ gauging system. Visitors to Diemould 2016 will see that the new range offers a wide choice of base plates and components available in M4, M6 and M8 thread sizes, and can be utilised for measurement applications across multiple industries, such as aerospace, automotive and medical.

Renishaw Equator™, a lightweight, fast and highly repeatable gauge, will be demonstrated in an automated cell. Equator’s innovative flexible gauging technology is based on the comparison of production parts to a reference master part, which can greatly increase throughput and reduce scrap rates at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent custom gauging system. Equator can switch between parts in seconds, perfect for flexible manufacturing processes or accepting parts from multiple machines.

A new process monitoring window has also been added to the shop-floor user interface for the Equator gauging system. This instantly displays measurement results of inspected features to the operator on a bar-graph display. It also shows the history of measurement on each feature so that process trends can be seen. The system’s re-mastering process can now be managed based on temperature limits, number of parts or time since last master.

Enhancements in metal 3D printing
Visitors to Diemould will also see a new range of additive manufacturing technologies. Renishaw’s laser melting systems utilise a pioneering, additive manufacturing process capable of producing fully dense metal parts direct from 3D CAD, using a high-powered fibre laser. Parts are built from a range of fine metal powders that are fully melted in a tightly controlled atmosphere, in layer thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 microns.

The AM250, Renishaw’s first additive manufacturing machine is now available with PlusPac – an add-on kit which transforms the machine to meet the demand for cleaner process environments, improved surface finish and precision. PlusPac includes new Optical Control Software (OCS), a gas knife lens window protection system, and a high capacity filtration system. These updates give the user tighter control over the build process, enabling users to create even better components.

Renishaw is pleased to announce the launch of a new vision measurement probe (RVP) for use with the REVO 5-axis measurement system on co-ordinate measuring machines (CMMs). RVP increases the multi-sensor capability of REVO by adding non-contact inspection to the existing touch-trigger, high-speed tactile scanning and surface finish measurement capability of the system.

For certain applications, non-contact inspection provides clear advantages over traditional tactile probing techniques. Thin sheet metal parts or components with large numbers of holes as small as 0.5 mm, and parts which are not suited to tactile measurement, can be fully inspected with the RVP system. RVP also gives exceptional improvements in throughput and CMM capability by utilising the 5-axis motion and infinite positioning provided by the REVO head.

The RVP system comprises a probe and a range of modules that are automatically interchangable with all other probe options available for REVO. Data from multiple sensors is automatically referenced to a common datum. This flexibility means that the optimum tool can be selected to inspect a wide range of features, all on one CMM platform.

When using RVP, part illumination is provided by integrated programmable LED lighting inside each module. Background feature enhancement is also available using backlighting combined with bespoke part fixturing.

The RVP system is managed by the same I++ DME compliant interface as REVO and full user functionality is provided by Renishaw’s MODUS™ metrology software. New MODUS vision software capability includes RVP configuration, image processing with application specific options and automatic image storage for review and further analysis.

COORD-3 is one of the few suppliers to manufacture its CMM structures from aluminium alloy and silicon-carbide, offering maximum metrology performance and productivity.

Even in a lab with environmental control, traditional granite CMM frames have significant thermal mass and take much longer to absorb and dissipate thermal changes, whereas, aluminium’s high coefficient of thermal conductivity allows the machine structure to respond more rapidly and linearly with temperature fluctuations.

This is important as it is necessary to predict CMM thermal behaviour and compensate for it in order to ensure machine accuracy over its operating temperature range. CMMs that expand linearly without induced constraints are easier to compensate for, which improves measurement repeatability.

The low structural weight of aluminium also improves the CMM’s acceleration and deceleration – enhancing overall traverse speed and ultimately increasing measurement throughput.

This allows the CMM to operate at relatively high speed, which is particularly important for in-line applications where inspection operations need to keep pace with production.

Renishaw provides real-time temperature compensation with its 3-axis UCC S3 and 5-axis UCC T5 controllers, allowing temperature monitoring of up to 16 different locations, using sensors which can be fixed to the X, Y, and Z axes of the CMM and to the workpiece being measured. The thermal data is then combined with axis feedback from the TONiC encoder system to produce high fidelity measurements that allow the machine to minimise thermal error and reduce measurement uncertainty.

A TONiC readhead, with 0.1 μm resolution, and RTLC FASTRACK scale, is installed on each CMM axis.FASTRACK is a scale carrier system, comprising two miniature guide rails, that securely retains Renishaw’s 8 mm x 0.2 mm low-profile stainless steel scales and allows them to freely expand at their own CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) with almost zero hysteresis (for example, <1 μm on a centre-clamped 2 metre axis over the entire operating temperature range). Another advantage of this system is that damaged scale can be quickly removed and replaced, even when access is limited, thus reducing machine downtime. This feature is also ideal for large machines that need to be sectioned prior to transportation.

abrizio Tonellato, COORD-3’s principal electronics engineer, explains:

“The main challenge with CMMs is ensuring measurement repeatability. Renishaw’s TONiC encoders withFASTRACK have solved the problems associated with differential thermal expansion between the scale and machine axis on which it is applied. Strong points of the TONiC encoder series include: high measurement precision, linear thermal expansion of scale due to CTE of scale, ease of installation and set-up and easily replaceable FASTRACK scale for straight-forward maintenance.”

Mr Vaccaro emphasises: “Scales and readheads are of primary importance for CMMs and TONiC withFASTRACK embodies the COORD-3 design philosophy. Different materials are used to build a CMM and Renishaw’s encoder scales help minimize the CMM measuring error and maximize precision.” Mr Vaccaro adds: “COORD-3 CMMs are built largely from aluminium and Renishaw’s encoders help to compensate for expansion and thermal movement. In creating our CMMs, we are not bound in the choice of the materials because Renishaw’s FASTRACK mounted scale is largely free to expand independently of the machine structure. TONiC with FASTRACK and the UCC S3 / T5 controllers are stable, flexible and well-designed products, which have helped to triple our sales.”

COORD-3 CMMs can also feature a Renishaw PH20 touch-trigger system, which allows easy access to features at any angle and can deliver a 3-fold increase in measurement throughput over traditional systems. Unlike conventional touch-trigger measurement methods, which rely on speeding up the motion of the CMM to measure quickly, PH20 utilizes head motion technology developed for the multi-award winning REVO®system to minimize the dynamic errors of the CMM at higher measurement speeds.

Renishaw plc is pleased to announce the appointment of Clive Martell MSc, CEng, MIET, former President and CEO of Delcam, to a new role as Head of Global Additive Manufacturing. Clive, age 54, progressed from a graduate recruit to become CEO of Delcam plc, where he successfully managed the company’s transition from an AIM (Alternative Investment Market) company to an operating division of Autodesk. After his appointment as Delcam’s CEO in 2009 his successful track record of delivering strong revenue and profit growth earned him the CEO of the Year Award at the 2013 Grant Thornton Quoted Company Awards.

In his new role at Renishaw, Clive will report to Geoff McFarland, Group Engineering Director and will be responsible for the strategy and direction of additive manufacturing across the Renishaw Group. He will liaise with development teams in the UK and sales and marketing operations across the world and will be particularly focussed on making a global success of Renishaw as an additive manufacturing (AM) solutions provider. As part of this new role Clive will also guide the company’s Additive Manufacturing products line based in Staffordshire, UK, which develops new AM systems and the Medical Dental products line, which delivers AM solutions for the healthcare sector. Clive will also become a member of Renishaw’s International Sales and Marketing Board.

Renishaw, a market-leading engineering technologies company, will introduce Inspection Plus with SupaTouch™ at EMO 2015, Milan, Italy (5th-10th October). This enhanced software package automatically optimises on-machine measurement cycles to minimise cycle time and maximise productivity.

The software features an easy-to-use optimisation process to automatically determine and select the highest feedrates a machine tool can achieve whilst maintaining measurement accuracy. It also uses intelligent in-cycle decision making to implement either a one or two-touch probing strategy for each measurement routine.

Inspection Plus with SupaTouch optimisation eliminates the need for manual optimisation of on-machine positioning feedrates, measurement feedrates and strategies. When compared with traditional software cycles, it provides a significant cycle time reduction of up to 60% on CNC machine tools.

For visitors to IMTEX 2015 who use five-axis machine tools, Renishaw has further extended its solutions for checking the alignment and positioning performance of machine tool rotary axes with the launch of new off-axis rotary software for its XR20-W rotary axis calibrator. The new software for the highly successful XR20-W now allows it to be used to measure the rotary positioning accuracy of an axis on many configurations of five axis machine tools, where the XR20-W often cannot be mounted on the centre of rotation.

World’s first 3D printed metal bike
Also on display will be a bike with the world’s first 3D printed metal frame. Empire Cycles, based in Bolton, UK, designed the mountain bike to take advantage of Renishaw’s additive manufacturing technology, allowing them to create a titanium alloy frame that would be both strong and light using topological optimisation. Individual sections have been bonded together and the new frame is some 33% lighter than the original.

Renishaw is pleased to unveil the machine that it is developing specifically for production manufacturing. Provisionally named EVO Project, it is the first additive manufacturing system designed and engineered in-house at Renishaw and reflects the company’s 40 years of experience in supplying high quality equipment to demanding global manufacturing businesses.

The new machine, which has a strong emphasis on automation, monitoring technologies and reduced operator interaction, is designed for single material industrial production. Powder handling is almost entirely hands off, whilst powder recirculation, recycling and recovery are all carried out within the inert atmosphere of the system, protecting both the user and the integrity of the material.

The EVO Project machine incorporates a high power 500 W laser which will aid productivity whilst still maintaining precision and surface finish. It also boasts a class leading high capacity filtration system, a large 19” HMI user interface and intelligent workflow to further reduce the need for operator interaction.

The new machine, which is planned to be available in the second-half of 2015, is designed to complement and not replace the current Renishaw AM250 system which is better suited for flexible manufacturing and research applications where changes between materials are a requirement. The AM250 has an interchangeable hopper system which allows various materials to be used on the same machine.

Renishaw continues to develop the AM250 system which is also benefitting from some of the developments made for the EVO Project machine. This has led to the recent introduction of the PlusPac™ upgrade pack which offers improvements to Z-axis seals and chamber lighting, plus substantially improved gas recirculation and filtration.

At Euromold 2014, taking place between 25th and 28th November in Frankfurt, the Renishaw stand will feature an EVO Project machine, AM250 system and an AM250 fitted with the PlusPac upgrade.

RLS d.o.o., Renishaws associate company based in Komenda, Slovenia, has launched a new online shop – www.rls.si – for its extensive range of magnetic encoders, including the new AksIM off-axis rotary absolute encoder.

The online shop enables customers to configure their magnetic encoder to their specific requirements, and purchase up to 10 encoders at a time.

“The new website and online store is an exciting step forward toward increasing user satisfaction”, said Janez Novak, Director of RLS. “With the easy-to-use configurator and the possibility to buy up to 10 pieces, the new RLS online shop is a perfect tool for placing small orders.” Besides providing the configurator and a quicker way of ordering RLS magnetic encoders, the new website also provides an easier way for customers to request specific customisation by the RLS engineering team.

The new website also offers an improved user experience; besides the fresh new look, the information and technical details about encoders are all accessible directly on the product pages, reducing the need for downloading documentation.

Renishaw, the global engineering technologies company, will present its range of advanced encoder products at Precisiebeurs 2014 from November 12-13 in the NH Conference Centre Koningshof, Veldhoven, the Netherlands.

Visitors to stand 164 will see the latest ATOM miniature encoder, an innovative optical linear and rotary (angle) incremental encoder system that uniquely combines miniaturisation with unrivalled metrology performance. This is the first miniature encoder to use optical filtering principles and combines Renishaw’s proven filtering optics with Auto Gain Control (AGC) and Auto Offset Control (AOC) for exceptional dirt immunity and the highest signal stability.

The ATOM readhead provides class-leading accuracy with low Sub-Divisional Error (SDE), low jitter, excellent signal stability and long-term reliability. It also includes a set-up LED to allow quick and easy installation and an auto-calibration routine to enable faster optimisation. ATOM offers speeds of up to 20 m/s (29 000 RPM on a 17 mm disc) and resolutions to 1 nm (0.004 arc second on a 108 mm disc). Customers can choose from a range of high-accuracy scales: stainless steel tape to 10 m in length, glass spars to 130 mm and rotary glass discs from 17 mm to 108 mm in diameter. Custom scale lengths and disc diameters are also available on request.

The ultra-compact ATOM readhead is supplied in hi-flex cable and Flexible-Printed Circuit (FPC) output variants with both 20 µm and 40 µm scale options. The side-exit FPC version reduces the overall package size and allows integration with PCBs. ATOM is ideally suited to a variety of space-critical motion control, inspection and metrology applications; talk to stand representatives for more information.

ATOM is joined by Renishaw’s RLE laser interferometer system, which is specifically designed for high-precision position feedback applications. Each system consists of an RLU laser unit and one or two RLD10 detector heads, which can be selected from a range of six different types for maximum application flexibility. Benefits of the RLE system include fibre-optic laser launch, integrated interferometer optics and beam steerers, the removal of thermal error sources, less than ± 1 nm SDE and ease of use when compared with conventional laser systems. RLE provides the user with sub-nanometre resolution capability at velocities of up to 2 m/s for axis lengths of up to 4 m.

The co-founders of global engineering company Renishaw plc, Sir David McMurtry and John Deer, have been honoured with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Gloucester Citizen and Gloucestershire Echo Business Awards.

The award recognises individuals who have made a considerable, profitable and lasting contribution to business in Gloucestershire over a period of at least 20 years.

Stuart Barnes, director of award sponsor QuoLux, said, “I am delighted to announce that the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award has been given jointly to two men whose leadership, vision, skill, entrepreneurial spirit and determination led to the founding of Renishaw-one of Gloucestershire’s most outstanding success stories.

He continued, “Now Renishaw employ 2,000 people in the county and has 110 current apprentices and recruited 68 graduates this year. They are quite literally at the cutting edge of new technology, a global player whose expertise ranges from the latest 3D printing to providing the technology to help enable life-enhancing surgery.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire about the award, John Deer said, “It’s quite fantastic; a real honour”, whilst Sir David noted that although a lifetime award has a “degree of finality” he felt that “there is plenty of life in the old dogs yet!”

Renishaw was formed in April 1973 and although today it employs 3,600 people in 32 countries, for the first three years it was based at John Deer’s home in Chepstow, Wales, where the dining room was the office, the garage was the machine shop and assembly took place in the spare bedroom.

Ben Taylor, Renishaw’s Assistant Chief Executive, says, “We feel extremely proud of Sir David and John, who are modest men that have created a highly successful global company based on their founding principles of innovation, high quality manufacturing and excellent customer support. The standing ovation that they received from the 750 people present at the awards spoke volumes for what they have achieved over the past 40 years.”
