A subcontractor needs to be able to read the files transmitted by its customers, as simply as possible. However, in the context of a call for tenders, it is not uncommon to receive a part file in the format favored by the prime contractor, who does not care whether the subcontractor has the interface necessary to read it! Obviously, the ideal would be to be able to work without an interface. But that would require both the principal and the subcontractor to be equipped with the same software, TopSolid for example. As this is not always the case, and many contractors are equipped with expensive high-end solutions, it is therefore imperative to be able to recover data regardless of their origin or source. This is precisely what TopSolid’Cam allows you to do!

 

Machining: various origins and sources

TopSolid, Creo (ProE), NX (Siemens), Catia (Dassault), SolidWorks (Dassault)… A part or assembly may have been designed in different software. Also, the origin corresponds to the software issuing the document.

In parallel, it is necessary to take into account the source, that is to say the interface used to emit the file or the assembly to be machined. Two scenarios:

  • Work directly with the issuer’s native format file . This requires having the “native” interface for reading compatible files available in your CAD/CAM software.
  • Work with a non-native file. In this case, the transmitting software wrote the file in another “non-native” file format and exported the file via an export interface in the desired format. To be able to read this file with your CAD/CAM, the interface for reading the file in the received format (Step, Parasolid, x_t, dxf, dwg, etc.) must be available.

Given that interfaces are communication tools between contractors and subcontractors, if you use a poor-quality interface (or even if you don’t use one at all), you risk tainting your communication. . However, it is crucial for a subcontractor to have reliable interfaces, so as not to be limited in its relationship with the principals who could be its future customers.

3D XML, Autocad, Catia, FBX, OpenPackage, ParaSolid, Sketchup, SolidWorks… The TopSolid’Cam CAD/CAM software is able to interface with nearly 40 different interfaces, to allow you to manage all your clients’ files, both import and export, regardless of their source or origin.

Subcontractors & principals: the interest of favoring the most beneficial common interface for both parties

When non-native file export/import interfaces are used, two rewrites of the original file are necessarily performed. For example, a native Catia file can be transformed into a Step Ap242 file on export, before being transformed back into a TopSolid file on import.

Even if these interfaces are very tested, it happens that more or less serious errors of interpretation occur. To avoid this pitfall, TopSolid has developed dedicated tools to correct these errors. If these work quite well, it is however necessary to spend some time to correct translation errors before starting programming. To overcome this loss of time, it is preferable to opt for a common interface for both parties.. For each interface, TopSolid includes a native interface in read mode: if we take our example of a native Catia file, rather than rewriting it in two different formats, it is therefore preferable to directly use the native Catia interface in reading proposed in TopSolid. Such an approach brings benefits for both parties.

For the principal, there is no longer any need to export his file in intermediate format:

  • Time saving : because it is no longer necessary to export with all the associated settings
  • Saving space in data storage on disks , since the file no longer has to be saved twice (as when exporting a Word file to PDF)
  • Limits the risk of writing errors when exporting the document, which also saves time

Moreover, for all these reasons, some contractors flatly refuse to use file export interfaces and oblige their subcontractors to work with native files.

The advantages for the subcontractor:

  • Be sure to recover a file without errors (since native)
  • Limit the risk of errors when reading since there is only one interface used; the one to read the file and convert it to TopSolid format.
  • Benefit from more possibilities on the recovered data . The native interfaces indeed offer more possibilities, in particular on the data relating to the drilling and on the annotations.

PMI Recovery

If the exchanges of CAD data between the subcontractor and the principal are not done directly with TopSolid, it will then be necessary to favor native interfaces and finally standard / standardized interfaces.

As most of the subcontractors who use TopSolid’Cam are forced to recover data from another origin than that of TopSolid, to save them time with native interfaces, TopSolid offers the recovery of PMI (Product Manufacturing Information ).

In addition to annotations and surface states, with these native interfaces, TopSolid can also report all the drilling operations detected on the geometry.

This is truly a significant gain in programming , since all the technical data of the holes are transmitted to TopSolid’Cam (bored hole, tapped hole, etc.) in order to automate the programming.

it’s a fact: jobs, missions, methods, organization, tools and work habits, … everything seems to oppose the Design Engineers and the Process Engineers, and this happens within many companies. The two entities often do not operate in the same environment and are geographically distant. The lack of interaction between the two departments can sometimes create what we speak of: a “border.”
However, at the time of Industry 4.0, where connectivity and communication in all directions are a strategic necessity.  The divide between the IT department through the manufacturing department tends to become a structural issue for the company’s performance.

1) Design Office VS Process Office: two entities often in opposition within a company

A) Reminder of the missions of each Design Office

Between engineering and expertise, the mission of the design office revolves around advice, recommendation, and control:

  • As a subcontractor, the design office receives and evaluates the feasibility of its entrusted external projects.
  • As an integrated department within a manufacturer, the design engineer is responsible for designing projects for their company’s customers.
  • Project management also falls within the scope of the design office, which must ensure compliance and traceability.

Process Office

As the linchpin between the production line and the design office, the process office is responsible for implementing the project from the design office. Its mission has several facets:

Validation of the product’s feasibility after studying elements such as modeling, average dimensions, the geometry of the raw material, or machining assembly.

  • Industrialization: it is the study of the means (tools, machines, operators, materials, and equipment) and the solutions to be implemented in the manufacturing process.
  • Optimization of work organization (flow management, access, handling, etc.) and machining (time and cost management) to increase productivity.
    They monitor machinery and equipment: reporting the need for maintenance or replacement.
  • Management of the conformity of the production about the operating procedures (order of operations, tools used, number of people, and time required to carry out each task).

A multi-faceted mission at the heart of which is naturally a strategic need for communication with the design office.

However, often these exchanges between departments are far from being fluid and collaborative.

 B) Two worlds that can clash

Creative on one side, functional on the other, and incompatibility of opinions … the reality is hardly subtle. Moreover, the lack of geographical proximity can also factor in.

It so happens that the mission of the Design Office lies in the conception of innovative projects resulting from R&D and consequently presenting a very elaborate technical plan. As such, the department can misrepresent these gratifying aspects, with other departments or subcontractors, thus obscuring how the projects will be industrialized… or even the project feasibility!

However, the Process Office is in charge of industrializing the projects issued by the Design Office … an endemic situation inevitably puts the two departments in opposition, with the Design Office defending innovation and considering the Process Office as the “brakes” on design and creativity … the Process Office, for its part, is not always able to respond favorably to the conceptual project because of a proven lack of solution.

Should we accept this state of affairs as inevitable and “deal with it”?

2) The disadvantages of a two strong opposition between Design Office and Process Office

One thing is sure; the two departments speak the same language: that of 3D modeling, average dimensions, raw materials, machine set-up, and tolerances. There is no shortage of opportunities to exchange information for the smooth running of the project: information needed for industrialization from the design office to the manufacturing office, as well as requests for clarification or revisions before launching the machining, from the manufacturing office back to the design office.

But when the border between the two departments is unbridgeable, a cascade of dysfunctions harmful to the entire organization ensues:

  • Waste of time in post-design discussions; each defending their own position.
  • Increased risk of errors and data loss if there is no direct exchange interface.
  • What about the automatic recovery of part properties and manufacturing characteristics for process office or design office patches?
  • And then … we talk about the work atmosphere and motivation?

It is mainly from this cumbersome operation that tensions arise. The loss of time due to a lack of reliability and traceability is the number one enemy of efficiency. A situation that increases standard costs potentially decreases the quality and puts a heavy burden on productivity… not to mention the delay in deadlines!

In short, the exact opposite of what is expected to meet the company’s strategic challenges. How, then, to create the bridge between the design office and the process office to close this counter-productive border?

Multiaxis Improvements
Morph, Parallel, Along Curve, and Project Curve are no longer individual toolpaths. 2D Enhancements
The Slot Mill toolpath no longer requires two parallel walls when selecting the machining geometry. You are now able to select any closed chain. 2D Contour Profile Ramp now supports the Override feed rate option which allows you to specify a feed rate for the entry or exit move, allowing you to slow down feed rates as you are engaging material. When you drag and drop items in the Toolpath Hole Definition panel, Mastercam now provides visual cues for the drop location. Also, the drag-and-drop icon now indicates whether you are dragging a single item or multiple items.

 

Additional Improvements in Mastercam Mill that benefit efficiency include:
