Siemens Digital Industries Software today announced the appointment of Mathew Thomas as the new Country Manager and Managing Director for India. Mathew succeeds Suprakash Chaudhuri, effective immediately. Bringing 30 years of industry experience to the role, Mathew, and his team, aim to drive profitable growth through customer success and by nurturing a high-performance organization. Previously, Mathew served as the Head of Sales for Software and Hardware business for four years, where he played an instrumental role in helping the India business witness significant year-on-year growth.

Siemens and Local Motors have formed a new partnership which is intended to help advance the future of manufacturing by optimizing the development and large-scale 3D printing of cars. Siemens’ Solid Edge® software, a mainstream computer-aided design (CAD) application, has been in use at Local Motors for several years and has been crucial in facilitating its co-creation model. Using Siemens’ exclusive synchronous technology, Local Motors is able to seamlessly import into Solid Edge non-native CAD models from design collaborators around the world, and then use Solid Edge to easily edit these models.

This new partnership expands the use of Solid Edge and adds Siemens’ NX™ software and its Fibersim™ portfolio to all Local Motors facilities around the world. NX, a comprehensive computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering simulation (CAD/CAM/CAE) solution and Fibersim, a portfolio of software for composites engineering, are both leading solutions in the global manufacturing industry with a high concentration in the automotive sector. March 17, 2016: Siemens’ integrated suite of computer aided design (CAD), product data management (PDM) and product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions are replacing the legacy system of German automotive supplier Bosch in its Electrical Drives division. Starting in summer 2016, Siemens NX™ software and Teamcenter® software will serve as the common development platform for the division’s global operations. Bosch has been using CAD/PDM/PLM software from Siemens in other business units for several years. Its decision to expand into the Electrical Drives division is part of its strategic plan to consolidate its diversified tool landscape with a unified methodology for modelling, design and collaboration. The volume of the deal will not be disclosed.

Bosch’s decision for Siemens software aligns with its goal to optimize the value chain of the Electric Drives division with a modular toolkit-concept. This will also be the basis for digital collaboration between different departments across the product development process. The increased standardization and new functionalities will help Bosch realize scale effects more specifically. The digital end-to-end process Bosch is deploying will enable faster innovation, accelerated time-to-market and broader support for the Industry 4.0 strategy, which will secure and extend competitive advantages for the Stuttgart based automotive supplier.

Siemens is presenting a ground-breaking new concept for efficient work processes surrounding the Sinumerik 840D sl CNC controlling the form of Smart Operation. Jobshops will benefit particularly from the use of Smart Operation, as it allows all kinds of work at the machine tool to be performed with greater flexibility and speed and so helps to boost productivity. The new concept encompasses aspects such as job preparation, IT networking, improved usability with touch operation and the use of mobile devices to perform monitoring and control functions. In short, Smart Operation significantly simplifies the integration of machines into the production process. Smart Operation does not require support by IT specialists and can be simply implemented independently by machine operators – meaning that companies can implement the individual functions using minimal financial and organizational resources.

Smart Operation encompasses four areas: Smart Prepare, Smart Operate, Smart IT, and Smart Mobile. Smart Prepare is concerned with job preparation and the generation of CNC programs at the PC. Siemens offers high-performance software for this purpose in the form of Sinutrain. Known as training software, Sinutrain is used as an offline programming workstation within the scope of the new concept. The benefit: By programming and simulating the next job ahead of time offline at the PC, producing companies can make significant gains in terms of productive time at the machine.

Smart Operate comes with a number of innovations to enhance usability and improve the user interface. The Sinumerik Operate user interface now offers comprehensive touch control. In combination with the new Blackline Panels OP 015 black and OP 019 black, Sinumerik Operate now offers an array of carefully considered and innovative multitouch operating features. Siemens has optimized the representation of familiar functions to improve user experience, for instance with an improved overview, simpler operation or faster interaction. All the softkeys and the keyboard can now be displayed and arranged for optimum convenience on-screen. The folder and file structure screen has also been improved, for instance with a function for adjusting font sizes and for hiding or showing detailed information.

The Smart IT aspect of Smart Operation enables data to be accessed and managed. Smart IT makes available all job-related documentation such as component programs, DXF drawings and pictures at the operator panel over the network connection. A new DXF viewer and reader now depicts files in the popularly used CAD data exchange format to be viewed directly at the machine tool. The user can select the geometry elements displayed in a DXF file using the contour capture function and transfer them directly for programming a workpiece machining operation. The option “Execution from External Storage” (EES) enables elective data accessing by the machine tool from connected USB memory sticks, hard drives and network resources. This permits workpiece data to be viewed directly at the machine and even large component programs to be run from external memories. If required, several NCUs – for instance in rotary transfer machines – can jointly access a central network memory.

Smart Mobile is a solution designed to enable the use of mobile devices in the machine tool environment. Using a secured webserver, users can deploy monitoring and control functions using a notebook, smartphone or tablet. This allows up-to-the-minute information such as the current job status or component supply situation to be accessed remotely, or service information to be displayed. These functions can benefit machine builders right from the early development stage of new machine concepts, allowing mobile access to be included as a standard feature from the outset.

Combining Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial spirit with its own engineering expertise, Siemens today announced the expansion of the startup Frontier Partner program run by Siemens Technology to Business (TTB) and Siemens’ product lifecycle management (PLM) software organization. The Frontier Partner program deepens Siemens’ long-standing ties to the area as it continues to find, fund, and forge the breakthrough technologies that will harness the power of data and accelerate the development and manufacturing of tomorrow’s innovative products.

The Frontier Partner program grants manufacturing-focused startups access to Siemens’ PLM software, its technology partner program, and other developmental resources. Siemens PLM Software is a leading global provider of digital software solutions that address areas such as product development, manufacturing, product data management and manufacturing operations management.

Siemens has already enrolled several startup companies into the Frontier Partner program as part of a pilot focusing on 3D printing innovations. With today’s announcement, Siemens is expanding the Frontier Partner program to entrepreneurs with a focus on robotics technologies.

In addition to the more than $1 billion Siemens invests annually in the U.S. for research and development, this latest digital entrepreneurial initiative from Siemens is aimed at getting innovations to market quicker by building on existing, industry-proven tools. With a presence in Silicon Valley since the 1950s, Siemens envisions a future where Silicon Valley companies will infuse the excitement and creativity seen in consumer-focused apps into industrial software that will increase productivity, efficiency, speed-to-market and flexibility in modern manufacturing.

Founded in 1999 in Berkeley, California, Siemens TTB aims to nurture partnerships with startups to connect thousands of engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs to business opportunities around the globe. TTB is part of the Siemens Corporate Technology unit, which is comprised of some 7,400 of the world’s most talented innovators, scientists, engineers and technical experts from over two dozen countries.

The Frontier Partner program supports startups in the product development phase. Startups accepted into the pilot receive a year-long development license to a comprehensive suite of Siemens’ PLM software that enables them to develop the new product. Additionally, participants have access to Siemens development mentors and other technology partners who utilize Siemens software.

  • Matterfab – developing a metal 3D printer for industrial use.
  • MatterMachine – platform enabling scalable bespoke manufacturing.
  • nTopology, Inc. – building software to generate optimized 3D lattice structures.

The expansion of the Frontier Partner program was announced at Bold Bets: Tomorrow’s Industrial Entrepreneurship (And How Everything Will Change) – an event held by The Atlantic at the University of California, Berkeley that focused on the digitalization of infrastructure and how the infusion of entrepreneurship and data will impact industrial manufacturing and software. With the new application center in the direct vicinity of its headquarters, KUKA Roboter Italia SpA has opened completely new premises where KUKA can offer customers numerous different robot cells for training purposes, information and advanced technical training.

The demo cells cover areas of application from the most varied of sectors – from consumer goods and machine control on to programming with Siemens Sinumerik and KUKA Motion Control for non-anthropomorphic kinematic systems and robot-controlled welding.

The opening ceremony in March also presented an opportunity for inaugurating the new KUKA showroom – a facility that provides that extra something for seminars and conferences.

Demo Cell– LBR IIWA
In this cell, the LBR iiwa robot carries out the assembly of metal and plastic components, thus demonstrating its “adaptive” properties through the use of its integrated sensors in the robot arm and the force feedback signals. Demo Cell– Mxautomation / Siemens Runmyrobot
In this cell, the KR AGILUS Waterproof small robot demonstrates the handling of workpieces and simulates the loading and unloading of a machine tool. The special feature of this cell is that the robot is programmed directly via the Siemens 840d control module: with the RunMyRobot option, this module makes it possible for operators of the machine to program the robot themselves – without any knowledge of the specific programming language – using intuitively designed operator control elements. In this manner, even KUKA newcomers are immediately comfortable with the system.

Demo Cell – Safeoperation
In this cell, the KR 90 R3100 EXTRA from the KR QUANTEC family demonstrates the capabilities of the KUKA.SafeOperation option using a 3D laser scanner from SICK. Thanks to the laser scanner, the robot cell can be operated without any safeguard and can be awarded a Category 3 safety certificate. Beyond this, the cell provides a view of the various safety level settings, taking into account the proximity of the operator.

Demo Cell – KUKA Motion Control Continuous Kinematics
This cell shows how the KUKA robot controller can also control other motion sequences, including, for example, a station for handling and palletizing objects. Customers even have the option of standardizing the controller and the user interface of the robot so that these can be used not only for KUKA robots but also for any other external kinematic systems.

Demo Cell – Consumer Industry
This cell is, above all, oriented towards products for the consumer goods sector. Applications in this sector require high-performance robots for Pick&Place tasks as well for palletizing objects. These tasks are all coordinated with a high-speed conveyor and image processing systems for the localization and control of products.

A KR 40 PA robot – a particularly compact, high-performance palletizing robot with four axes – can be directly synchronized with a conveyor using the ConveyorTech option. The robot also features the KUKA VisionTech image processing system, which allows images to be displayed directly on the user interface of the SmartPad and/or on an external.

Siemens has widened its portfolio of planetary gear units, showcased at the Hannover Messe 2015. The Planurex 3 is available in ten sizes, with a torque range from 1,700 to 5,450 kNm. This raises the highest torque in the standard modular system from the previous 2,600 kNm up to 5,450 kNm. The size grading is harmonized to reduce the jump in power ratings between different sizes. This makes a suitable torque and a suitable transmission ratio available for almost every application. The gear units also have the highest efficiency in their class. This has been achieved by increasing the torque density (Nm/kg) by an average of 17.2 percent in comparison to the previous series. A compact design enables space-saving, high transmission ratios to be achieved. This not only reduces the weight, but also the stress on the gear unit and application. Planurex 3 is part of an Integrated Drive System (IDS), which is available as a complete solution, comprising motor, gear unit and coupling, combined with an oil supply system. The integrated drive system facilitates economic, efficient plant operation, as the components are perfectly matched to one another. The technologically further developed Flender Planurex series 3 replaces the Planurex 2 planetary gear unit series, initially in the XL range up to 5,450 kNm. The harmonized size grading across the entire torque range allows better dimensioning of the gear units.

Thanks to their ruggedness, all sizes of the new planetary gear unit can absorb peak loads up to twice their nominal torque. Siemens has also extended the warranty on the Planurex 3, and shortened its delivery times.Planetary gear units are primarily installed where high output ranges are required in limited space. They are typically used as roller press and central drives for tube mills in mines and cement plants. The Planurex 3 planetary gear unit series is available in ten sizes, and has the highest efficiency in its class. This technologically further developed series replaces the previous Planurex 2, initially in the XL range up to 5,450 kNm.

The Siemens Managing Board is establishing a Siemens Technology & Innovation Council (STIC). Comprising internationally experienced and respected experts from the research and scientific communities, the Siemens Technology & Innovation Council will closely support the Managing Board in systematically analyzing and monitoring strategic topics in the areas of technology and innovation. The council will focus, in particular, on developments, innovations and technologies that will have an impact on Siemens’ business over the next ten years. Peter Gruss has been appointed to head the expert panel. He will also steer its orientation and composition.

Acquisition to Expand Siemens’ Manufacturing Execution Systems Offerings; Delivers on Siemens’ Strategy for a Fully Integrated Digital Enterprise.

Siemens has entered into an agreement to acquire Camstar Systems, Inc., one of the proven market leaders in enterprise Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) software. The acquisition will build on Siemens’ industrial digitalization strategy by broadening its integrated product development and production automation solutions for the electronics, semiconductor and medical device industries. Today’s announcement represents the latest step to help companies realize innovation with a truly integrated digital enterprise. Camstar’s best-in-class MES solutions will complement Siemens’ existing vertical industry offerings. Camstar will become part of Siemens’ product lifecycle management (PLM) business. The transaction is expected to close during the second half of November, 2014. Terms of the acquisition will not be disclosed.
