Bosch and Microsoft collaborate to develop a software-defined vehicle platform. The collaboration brings together automotive and cloud computing expertise to shape the next generation of vehicle software.

Bosch has teamed up with Microsoft to develop a software platform to seamlessly connect cars to the cloud. The goal of this collaboration is to simplify and accelerate the development and deployment of vehicle software throughout a car’s lifetime in accordance with automotive quality standards. The new platform, which will be based on Microsoft Azure and incorporate software modules from Bosch, will enable software to be developed and downloaded to the control units and vehicle computers. A further focus of the collaboration will be on the development of tools that increase efficiency in the software development process. This, in turn, will drive innovation and reduce development costs for vehicle software within and across organisations. For drivers, the platform will mean quicker access to new functions and digital services. The collaboration between Bosch and Microsoft combines the wealth of software, electronics, and systems expertise of the world’s leading automotive supplier with Microsoft’s know-how in software engineering and cloud computing. Both companies intend to make the new software platform available for first vehicle prototypes by the end of 2021.

This includes the basic software and middleware for vehicle computers and control units, as well as cloud-based software modules to bring over-the-air updates to entire vehicle fleets. “Having a comprehensive software platform from the vehicle to the cloud will reduce the complexity of the software development and the vehicle system integration. The pre-integrated platform will greatly reduce the complexity of over-the-air updates, which help ensure that a vehicle’s software is always up to date, thanks to the fact that the software architectures of vehicles and the cloud will now fit together seamlessly.

New software services for developers
Bosch and Microsoft also plan to enrich existing developer tools that will enable automakers and suppliers to simplify and accelerate their own software development, while adapting to the unique challenges in the automotive industry.

The Power Tools Division of the Bosch Group is one of the world’s leading providers for power tools, power tool accessories and measuring tools. In 2015, its roughly 20,000 associates generated sales of 4.5 billion euros, about 85% of which was outside of Germany. With brands such as Bosch and Dremel, the division stands for customer focus and great engineering progress. Our core success factors are innovative strength and pace of innovation. In 2017, Bosch Power Tools will again launch more than 100 new products onto the German market in its four business segments power tools, accessories, measuring tools and garden tools.

According to ‘Research and Markets’ report, India power tools market is anticipated to register healthy CAGR of 8.9% in terms of value, and 9.5% in terms of volume over the forecast period (2016-2026). The market for power tools had witnessed a robust growth in terms of revenues in the past few years. Indian Power tool industry is an import driven market with a large proportion of products imported in the country through countries such as China, Germany, UAE, Japan, Korea and others.

Bosch Power Tools experienced strong growth in 2016. We sold around over a million power tools. Our success is based on consistently focusing on the user. We know what their needs are and we can offer the users suitable solutions.

Bosch Power Tool is well-positioned for coming years. We see opportunities for growth in emerging markets and online in particular – for example with online sales and with our increasingly connected products.

What are the new innovations in Power Tool technology?
Innovative strength is an important basis for the success of Bosch Power Tools. In 2016, Bosch has introduced a brand new saw blade technology for do-it-yourselfers in the form of ‘NanoBlades’ technology which is based on a saw blade with a revolving micro-chain. It consists of chain links which are only four millimeters in size – similar to a chainsaw, only smaller. The revolving chain means that the pendulum movement which is typical of jigsaws and saber saws, featuring high vibrations and saw blade running, is no longer required.

With this saw, Bosch is taking sawing to the next level. Our ‘NanoBlades’ allow any user to saw easily and precisely and produce exact right angles while doing so.

There are several Power Tool manufacturers in India. How you plan to tackle the competition?
Yes, the market is highly competitive with number of organized and unorganized players. The ‘Make in India’ initiative by the government has fostered the manufacturing sector which had led many companies to open their offices and start operations in India. The expansion of distribution channels and online sales, demand from professionals, increasing inexpensive imports from China has driven the power tools market in India. The review period also witnessed new campaigns, product launches and launch of new distribution channels. For an instance the premium retail store concept by Bosch (Bosch System Specialist) has created a niche market with its positioning as a total solutions provider for Power Tools while providing customers with a delightful shopping experience.

Cordless tools with Lithium ion battery are some of the many innovations from its portfolio.

Recently there has been a lot of buzz about E-commerce in industrial goods. What % of your overall sales comes from E-commerce and how do you see the future of industrial E-commerce business?
Future of Industrial ecommerce business — B2B E-commerce in India is in line with the government’s digital growth plans. Online B2B can be a wide platform with lots of scope. However, there are many hurdles it faces along the way – apart from policy ambiguity, B2B works on thin margins, hence, there are concerns about its scale and operation. In developed and developing markets, the E-commerce industry continues to evolve and experience high growth. With the emergence of non-banking players in the payments industry and innovative vertical specific start-ups, the Indian E-commerce market is expanding at a rapid pace.

How is Bosch Power Tools taking advantage of the ‘Make in India’ Program?
The power tool market in India had witnessed a robust growth in terms of revenues in the past few years. The market is highly competitive with number of organized and unorganized players. The ‘Make-In-India’ initiative by the government has fostered the manufacturing sector which had attracted many companies to open their offices and start operations in India.

Make in India initiative by Bosch Power Tool The new unit in Chennai, which started producing power tools for artisans and tradesmen in the price range of Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000, is part of the ‘Make in India’ program announced by the government to boost manufacturing. The facility, which is located close to Chennai, started humming in mid-2015. It produces more than 60 specific power tools. The production capacity from Chennai plant is 2.5 million per year. Currently, Bosch has 300 authorized service centres in the country.

Our main objective of setting up the plant was to focus on the Indian market, with product design for India. The factory caters to India and also exports the product to the SAARC region.

Bosch Power Tools India, that offers a complete range of power tools for construction, woodworking and metalworking industry, has announced the roll out of 5 Millionth Power Tools from the plant located in Oragadam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This manufacturing facility is spread over two acres with a capacity of producing 2 million power Tools every year. This plant is the 1st manufacturing facility of Bosch Power Tools in India. It manufactures products such as angle grinders, impact and rotary drills, rotary hammers, marble cutters, air blowers including motors for all the tools.

The facility started in mid-2015 and manufactures more than 60 specific power tools including eight types of power tools for artisans and tradesmen. The facility  is part of the Make-in-India programme announced by the government to boost manufacturing.

March 17, 2016: Siemens’ integrated suite of computer aided design (CAD), product data management (PDM) and product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions are replacing the legacy system of German automotive supplier Bosch in its Electrical Drives division. Starting in summer 2016, Siemens NX™ software and Teamcenter® software will serve as the common development platform for the division’s global operations. Bosch has been using CAD/PDM/PLM software from Siemens in other business units for several years. Its decision to expand into the Electrical Drives division is part of its strategic plan to consolidate its diversified tool landscape with a unified methodology for modelling, design and collaboration. The volume of the deal will not be disclosed.

Bosch’s decision for Siemens software aligns with its goal to optimize the value chain of the Electric Drives division with a modular toolkit-concept. This will also be the basis for digital collaboration between different departments across the product development process. The increased standardization and new functionalities will help Bosch realize scale effects more specifically. The digital end-to-end process Bosch is deploying will enable faster innovation, accelerated time-to-market and broader support for the Industry 4.0 strategy, which will secure and extend competitive advantages for the Stuttgart based automotive supplier.

For the third time, the Tübingen-based specialist in high-tech metal cutting tools has been awarded the “Preferred Supplier” certificate from Robert Bosch GmbH. With this certificate, the automotive supplier, which manufactures across the world, honoured Walter for its high level of quality, innovative capability and on-time delivery.

As a long-standing partner of Bosch, Walter is currently supplying standard and special tools to over 50 Bosch sites in 17 countries: From indexable insert tools and round tools, through to complex special solutions. Bosch uses Walter tools to manufacture, in particular, injection systems, hydraulic components, and control and regulating elements.

Hannover – At the Hannover Trade Fair, Bosch is showcasing powerful concepts for a flexible and connected factory. This involves connecting software and hardware in an intelligent way so as to sustainably optimize the interplay of processes, machines, and people (Connected Shopfloor Solutions). It is an endeavor supported by mobile production assistants that work directly alongside people without the need for special safety guards. Modular automation systems make it possible to examine production processes in detail, visualize them, and so retain control at all times. Intelligent sensor systems join with innovative diagnostics solutions and operating concepts that draw on 3D visualization and augmented reality to help speed up reaction times and boost productivity.

Solutions that are benefiting Bosch today
Most of the solutions on display are already being put to good use within the Bosch Group, or else are currently undergoing testing. It is a testament to the international technology and service provider’s prominent dual role in Industry 4.0 as both a lead user and a lead provider. “At our booth, users can see for themselves how new solutions that focus on the user are making Industry 4.0 a reality,” says Volker Hartmann, Deputy Vice President Business Unit Assembly Systems and Special Machinery. “What’s been key is the overarching collaboration among various Bosch divisions. This is what allows us to develop the forward-looking solutions we use to improve efficiency in the production process. In so doing, we also lend our support to cross-sector trends such as individualization of products and shortened product lifecycles.”

APAS family: mobile production assistants for the factory of the future
A good example of this sort of solution is the APAS family of mobile production assistants, which Bosch developed specifically for Industry 4.0. All three of the production assistants on show in Hannover share a standardized operating concept and come with connectivity options that allow them to be employed anywhere, either on their own or in combination. What’s more, the new Remote Service Manager by Bosch Software Innovations will now allow APAS service technicians to complete installation, diagnostic, and maintenance work remotely – saving both time and money.

Integrated safety technology
APAS inspector is a mobile testing device for visual inspections equipped with a high-definition, high-speed camera and innovative 3D technology. Thanks to its exchangeable inspection modules, the APAS inspector can be used in all sorts of production scenarios, for instance highly delicate surface inspections or completeness checks. APAS flexpress is a mobile production assistant that allows for highly flexible and highly accurate assembly. Integrated safety technology ensures that human and machine work smoothly together. The same goes for the APAS assistant. It was the first assistance system certified by the German occupational health and safety agency and can work directly alongside people without the need for safety guards thanks to a special sensor skin interface. Visitors to the fair in Hannover will be able to see exactly how it works at the APAS coffee bar, where an APAS assistant will be preparing their coffee.

Intelligent sensor devices monitor critical processes in real time
People and machines will receive support across the entire production and logistics chain through the integration of Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions’ intelligent sensor devices. While the APAS assistant is placing the product with precision into the freight packaging designed for the purpose, a special app visualizes the motion and positioning on a monitor. Integrated sensors facilitate monitoring of the shipping process. Critical incidents such as unexpected opening of the package are registered by a light sensor and immediately reported to the person responsible, so they can undertake appropriate measures.

Comprehensive Shopfloor Management with the OPCON suite
The OPCON suite guarantees maximum transparency and flexibility across the entire value added chain with its IT Shopfloor Solutions. It is a modular, scalable automation system that allows you to manage production and quality data throughout, as well as logistics processes. “For over 15 years now, we’ve been steadily refining the OPCON system within the Bosch Group, and we use it to control hundreds of production plants worldwide,” says Hartmann. This year’s fair in Hannover will be the first time that OPCON will be showcased to members of the expert public and presented for use outside of the Bosch Group. The centerpiece is the Shopfloor Management module, which provides transparency across the entire value added chain via a broad range of software modules, allowing it to connect machines and analyze real-time production data. There are also intuitive graphical modeling tools from the Group’s own software and systems unit, Bosch Software Innovations, that enable specialist users to define rules without the need for programming knowledge. These rules allow critical system events to be identified automatically and suitable measures taken.

New user interfaces: 3D visualization and augmented reality
In connected manufacturing, specialists are supported by new visualization applications that give them a constant and comprehensive overview of all the production steps and processes. Once more, this is an area in which connectivity and intelligent interplay of hardware and software play a decisive role. Thanks to a collaboration with Fraunhofer IGD institute in Rostock, visitors in Hannover will be able to see a 3D visualization of a production process in its entirety – monitored and managed via a big touch screen. Changing the production sequence, for instance, is a simple case of swiping the screen.

Distinction for Best Integration of Human, Process and Machine.

A new assembly line at Bosch Rexroth AG in Homburg/Saar was recognized with the “Industry 4.0 Award“ as a pioneer in the practical implementation of Industry 4.0. The prize is awarded by the trade journal “Produktion” along with ROI Management Consulting AG. The independent panel evaluated the assembly line which was commissioned in the middle of this year to be the best implementation of Industry 4.0 in production.

“The solution implemented by Bosch Rexroth is exemplary of the potential of Industry 4.0: holistic and cost efficient implementation has led to significant improvements in productivity and serves as a model for other companies“, Hans-Georg Scheibe, Director of ROI Management Consulting AG, explained regarding the selection of Bosch Rexroth. The panel arrived at its decision on the basis of comprehensible indicators as well as an on-site visit. The award was given during the course of the Second Industry 4.0 Convention.

Over 200 different hydraulic circuits are assembled into a single value stream on the assembly line at the Bosch Rexroth plant in Homburg/Saar. Its special feature: using an RFID Chip on the work piece, the nine intelligent stations on the line recognize how the finished product has to be assembled and, accordingly, which operational steps are necessary. Displays show personnel the corresponding working instructions for the version that is to be processed. “The assembly line integrates human, product, and machine under conditions of flexible mass production“, stressed Frank Hess, Plant Manager at the Rexroth plant in Homburg. “Using this, we can economically and semi-automatically manufacture a multitude of customized products down to batch sizes of one”.

In the planning and implementation of the assembly line Bosch Rexroth primarily used its own products and solutions. The specialist for drive and control solutions links open automation solutions with its own intelligence. In 2013 Bosch Rexroth received the “HERMES AWARD“, an international technology prize, for a software solution that integrates machines with company IT.

The Bosch Group is forecasting further strong growth for India over the next few years, and expects to see positive economic development in the country over the medium and long term. Accordingly, the company sees India as a key pillar of its growth strategy in Asia Pacific. “Over the past ten years, Bosch has doubled its sales in Asia Pacific to 11.1 billion euros in 2013. By 2020, we are aiming to double our sales in the region again,” said Dr. Volkmar Denner, the chairman of the Bosch board of management, during a press briefing in Bangalore, India. Denner forecasts that after registering projected economic growth of around 4.8 percent this year, India will likely grow by 6 percent in 2015. This makes the country one of the global engines of growth alongside China. “We expect to see India establish itself as the world’s fifth largest vehicle manufacturer by the end of this decade,” Denner said.

The Bosch Group has been active on the subcontinent since 1922. In 2013, the company generated sales in India of approximately 1.2 billion euros, a three-fold increase over ten years ago. Bosch currently employs 27,000 associates at ten production sites and seven R&D locations in India. Since 2010, the Bosch Group has invested around 680 million euros in the expansion of manufacturing and research facilities there, of which some 160 million were invested in the current year alone.

Innovative solutions from India
India is home to the technology and services company’s largest development center outside Germany, employing 10,500 engineers. “We develop innovative solutions there which are used in products around the world,” said Steffen Berns, president of the Bosch Group in India. The rising number of patents filed testifies to the successful work at the center: from 20 registered innovations in 2008, this figure rose to 220 last year. “That’s a more than ten-fold increase within five years,” Berns said. Among the innovations developed by the Bangalore-based center is a compact retina camera with special software that can detect conditions such as cataracts at an early stage. This fast and cost-effective eye diagnostic tool was specifically designed to meet the needs of the Indian market, and can be easily put into use in similar regions as well.

Dynamic growth in two-wheeler market
Bosch also sees excellent opportunities in the booming two-wheeler market: last year it registered a growth rate of 14 percent, making it one of the most dynamic markets in India. “We predict that the number of two-wheelers sold annually on the subcontinent will reach 27 million by 2020,” Denner said. Worldwide, the number of motorbikes and electric e-scooters sold is expected to increase from 100 million today to 150 million by the end of the decade. By comparison, Bosch forecasts that some 110 million new cars will be sold worldwide in 2020.

Against this backdrop, Bosch is also entering the global motorcycle market with new powertrain systems. Especially in Asia and India, efficient powertrains can play an important part in reducing environmental impact. For this reason, Bosch has developed an affordable and robust engine management system that is specially designed for the Indian and Asian markets. Currently, many machines in Asia are still fitted with carburetors. It is precisely here that Bosch believes its technology offers a decisive advantage: “Compared with the mechanically controlled carburetor, and depending on situation, the electronically controlled fuel-injection system can reduce fuel consumption by up to 16 percent,” Denner said. This also significantly reduces emissions and conserves valuable resources. In addition, Bosch already supplies safety solutions for two-wheelers including ABS and the new MSC motorcycle stability control, which improves safety when braking and accelerating, even when the rider is leaning into a bend.
