Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of plasma, fiber laser and waterjet cutting systems, today announced a version update to its ProNest® advanced CAD/CAM nesting software for automated cutting. ProNest 2017 v12.1 contains numerous enhancements designed to enable customers to achieve more.

New features include:

Dynamic align – Allows users to create a connected column or row of rectangular parts, aligned on one side. Aligned parts can be connected with a common line or bridge, then quickly bumped together manually on the nest into dynamic align columns or rows. Dynamic align parts can also be created during automatic nesting.

3D CAD Part Bevel Detection – Identifies beveled edges on SOLIDWORKS® and Inventor® parts and automatically assigns ProNest beveling to them during import. Single and multi-pass beveling is supported.

Output for Multiple Machines – Creates NC output files for one or more additional machines at the same time as output for the current ProNest machine.

In total, this new version builds upon the already market leading capability of ProNest 2017 with the addition of more than a dozen new features and enhancements covering everything from common line cut sequencing to ERP integration to machine interface modules; many of which are suggestions provided by current users.

Users with an active Software Subscription can upgrade to this new version at no additional charge and continue to receive unlimited technical support, and other benefits.

The latest edition of Alphacam, from Vero Software – the world’s number one CAM developer – is rich with new features ranging across the modules, making it easier to use and improve productivity.

Amongst the new and enhanced functionality:

  • User interface improvements
  • New 3D Machining command
  • Updates to Machining cycles
  • Sawing enhancements
  • Simulation updates
  • Automation Manager improvements
  • New CAD files and versions

The overall user experience has been augmented in a number of ways, including restyled dialogs to provide a more intuitive layout, with images and tooltips included to help the user.  An example is the new 3D Machining dialog which provides the interface to multiple machining strategies in a consistent manner. Strategies available in the 3D Machining command are: Along Intersection; Constant Cusp; Cylindrical Parallel; Cylindrical Profiling; Drive Curves; and Z Contour Roughing.

The Work Plane Properties option in the Project Manager displays a window with a grid containing details of the work planes in the active drawing, such as the name and offset number, which can also be edited in the grid. Additionally, it is now possible to rename the move clamp/fixture operation in the Quick Edit window.

A new option in Drawing Notes means the Add-ins dialog will only be displayed if the opened drawing file already contains notes.

In Machining, the Cylindrical Parallel strategy now gives the option of setting the width of cut as a distance, and when editing settings, the Drawing Area will update with a preview of the tool and holder, if applicable. The machining area is indicated by a transparent shaded region around the part that is automatically updated when settings are changed in the dialog, allowing the user to visualise the effect that a change has on the operation.

Alphacam Router now includes improved foul avoidance for sawing. Previously when using a saw to cut parts, the risk of fouling other parts was increased due to the size of the blade. Alphacam 2017 R1 sawing operations now checks for fouling against all geometries selected for the same operation, resulting in toolpaths being trimmed, if necessary. This means that parts can be laid out on a sheet and all sawn as the same operation, using the automatic fouling check. The operator can use the new path extensions tool with options for extending saw paths by either, Distance, to Boundary or Pick Point, with reversing options.

For Simulator, the new release sees XY configurations supported on both the head and table.

The transfer of 5-axis toolpaths between Alphacam and the simulator has been optimised, meaning that complex operations containing toolpaths comprising thousands of individual elements are much faster. Furthermore, if program stops are included in the operation, they will now be recognised. All these improvements make the user experience more realistic and speed up the simulation process.

Automation Manager sees several new options that provide flexibility and performance improvements, these include:

  • Feature Extraction – From Faces: An option that enables the user to extract the solid body outline of the part.
  • For non-nested job files the ‘From Job’ option is now available in the Machining Order drop-down menu in the Processing Tab. This is now set as the default selection for non-nested job files.
  • Alphacam 2017 R1 gives the ability to copy and paste styles in the layer mapping setup tree by right-clicking and selecting Copy or Paste on the menu. Settings are retained when copying, which enhances efficiency by removing the need to re-apply settings each time a style is applied to a layer. It is also possible to copy and paste a complete setup, if required.

General Enhancements
Work Volume support has been added for the Parametric Sketcher – useful with many post processors that require the work volume dimensions for the NC controller.
User configurable Default Layer Setting – useful when creating designs with set layer configurations.

Improved Solid Model Assembly Splitting Support for SolidWorks and Solid Edge assemblies.

The Area Estimate routine has been improved to take account of drilled holes.

Alphacam’s Network License Profiles allow users to save their own selection of system and module licenses as a single profile, making it quick and easy to select pre-defined license options. For example, all network licensing users can create their own set of License Profiles and copy them to a shared folder on a nominated network PC, ensuring that all users can access the same ones. A particular profile can be specified when Profiles are being configured, or an option can be checked to select one from the list displayed when the licensed application is run.

Please tell us more about your company?
Designcell CAD CAM Solutions provides customised solutions to enrich and enhance design aspects and augment production capabilities. Started a decade ago, the company has been providing CAD/CAM solutions and has a technical prove out centre and machining facility at Vasai, (About 50 km from Mumbai). In addition, services like CMM inspection, Mould and Product design, Fixture design/manufacturing, CNC programming and machining are also being provided by us.

We initially started only selling the software and soon realised that to cater to our customers better we needed to become a complete solution provider. This in turn led us to venture into manufacturing of some of the critical parts for aerospace and space applications, using our own CAD CAM set up, by which we are able to enhance the value proposition for our customers.

What are the other solutions that you provide?
We offer various solutions for the tooling industry that can enhance our customers’ capabilities.

TopSolid’ is one of the first products we introduced. It is an integrated design and manufacturing software. This software has been developed by a group of mathematicians from France that makes it much more reliable and versatile for CAD CAM applications.

VoluMill’ is a software from USA that offers the most cost effective method of bulk-material removal for all rough milling operations. ‘VoluMill’ is a winner where it matters most ie. cost savings in machining time, less cutter consumption and hence cost and more importantly extended CNC machine life and less power consumption.

Tool Quote’ is a software that automates and organizes the tedious task of preparing quotations for toolmakers. The powerful graphic interface in the software allows for faster creation and visualization of tool layouts enabling the tool makers to send quick and reliable responses.

We also deal with magnetic work-holding and clamping devices from ‘Sarda Magnets’ Group. The company is a pioneer in designing and manufacturing of Magnetic work-holding, clamping, separation and lifting magnetic equipments. We provide training to our customers, both onsite and offsite. We have a 24/7 customer service facility including Sundays.

Our aim is to enhance the efficiency and productivity of our customers and continue to introduce them to best-in-class technologies available across the globe.

What do you mean when you say Total Solutions?
It means catering to customer’s demand right from the beginning to the end. If you look at the evolution of any product it begins from quotation, then product design and prototype, tool design thro’ to manufacture with validation at every stage using software and we are with them in all the stages of execution of the project successfully.

What are your views about Indian die mould industry?
India is going to become a manufacturing hub; it’s already in the radar of global manufacturing giants. Once these companies setup their bases in India, there will be an increase in demand for tooling and die mould solutions. Die Mould industry being the back bone of manufacturing, we foresee good times ahead for the tool and die manufacturers.

There are several CAM solution providers in India. How do you plan to compete with them?
Technology is the answer. We have some highly advanced products and we do not just sell products but provide solutions thro’ digital integration. Our philosophy is not selling software but to offer solutions. We handhold our customers in their business growth endeavour and assist them with long term solutions.

Which industry is your most important customer?
Of course Die & Mould. We also see good demand coming from industries like Aerospace, Medical and Energy.

How do you see the future of Indian CAD/CAM industry?
As the demands for automated solutions increase, we see the CAD/CAM industry growing significantly.

Future plans…
We shall keep adding more products to enhance our philosophy of becoming the ‘Total Solution Provider’.

Over the past five years, German automotive toolmaker Konrad Schäfer Modell und Formenbau has switched all its static and portable CMMs, as well as its hand scanners, to Delcam’s PowerINSPECT inspection software. The results of standardising on a single software have included lower training expenses, greater staff flexibility and perfect CAD compatibility.

The company’s roots in manufacturing models date back 110 years, originally in Muehlhausen, where Konrad Schäfer GmbH now has an additional production site. “We see ourselves as one of the leading manufacturers of design and data control models, inspection and function cubing, and control gauges for the European automotive industry,” explained Jörg Große-Beilage, head of the modelmaking department, which has been based in Osnabrueck since 1962.

Additional activities include models for vehicle interiors and prototypes for vehicle lights, as well as jigs and moulds for aerospace carbon fibre composites.

Konrad Schäfer GmbH transforms customers’ ideas into reality – five to ten years before they are ready for batch production – with the help of innovative approaches to prototyping, the newest CAD, CAM and metrology technologies, and a modern machine shop. Herr Große-Beilage also proudly pointed out that technical skill is still a crucial part of the organisation’s philosophy, something that wouldn’t be possible without motivated and well-trained staff.

At nearly every workstation, there is a CMM, either a stationary manual or CNC CMM, or a portable measuring arm. The range of measuring machines are of different ages and from Mora, Zett Mess and Stiefelmayer, while the portable arms are from FARO.

“Metrology is an important part of our core business,” says Herr Große-Beilage, one of the reasons Konrad Schäfer GmbH continually invests in this area; not only in machines but also in staff training. “Our target continues to be that both measurement engineers and model builders know how to use our metrology systems”. That was also one of the reasons why Konrad Schäfer GmbH started to convert their whole range of metrology machines to a universal software.

A wide range of solutions from different companies was reviewed as part of the selection and decision-making process, “but in the end PowerINSPECT convinced us the most.”

“The decision to purchase PowerINSPECT was absolutely spot on, even from today’s perspective,” says Herr Große-Beilage. On one hand this is because of the good CAD compatibility. Components in all CAD file formats can be inspected with PowerINSPECT, something that was particularly important for Konrad Schäfer GmbH.

In addition to the extensive feature set and the support from Delcam, the user-friendly interface was a key factor for Herr Große-Beilage and his team. The CAD File Manager in PowerINSPECT is just one example; this makes it easy to manage component groups. The decision was also easy because PowerINSPECT offered by far the best price-performance ratio.

Konrad Schäfer GmbH currently uses 16 licenses of PowerINSPECT, which have been purchased progressively. At the start, in 2009, the company purchased two licenses and contracted to buy four additional licenses in each subsequent year.

Portable coordinate metrology is becoming increasingly popular at Konrad Schäfer GmbH. Five Faro Gauge arms are already used, all supported by PowerINSPECT. “Manual measuring arms have the advantage that I can measure quicker than with a stationary measuring machine because I can just measure one zero point and then inspect everything else from top to bottom without adjusting anything,” explained Herr Große-Beilage. “But because I’m limited by the part size, the movable stand measuring machine is definitely better suited to a whole car”.

Christian Wollbrick, a metrologist who works daily with the software, confirmed that PowerINSPECT’s ease-of-use means that even untrained staff can get started immediately. “Elements can be interactively selected in the CAD view, for example,” he said. “This makes inspection programming significantly easier and quicker, something that is really useful when you just work with the system from time-to-time.”

Moreover, the ability to define a critical measurement point in advance and to be led to that point by PowerINSPECT during the measurement is very valuable. “This is particularly beneficial with hand-held devices, as it guarantees consistent and repeatable measurements.”

Work on inspection cubes depends on being able to work as flexibly as possible, yet at the same time in a reproducible way with a three-axis CMM. “Test cubes are reference models that simulate the body in white. Subsequent parts that occur in different car types can be built in or attached to them,” explained Herr Große-Beilage. “So you can test in advance, whether they truly fit or check that there are no interfering edges and also if joints and radii are correct. Every manufacturer has different reporting standards but we can implement them really quickly with PowerINSPECT.”

Geometric Ltd. announced its second quarter financial results for FY 2015-2016 at the board meeting held recently.

Highlights for the quarter ended September 30, 2015 (Q2 FY16)

  • Consolidated Profit after Tax rose to INR  230.24 Mn this quarter from INR 191.27 Mn in Q1FY16 and INR 162.9 Mn in Q2FY15, a growth of 20.4% q-o-q and 41.3% y-o-y
  • Revenue in USD terms grew to USD 47.46 Mn compared to USD 46.80 Mn in the previous quarter and USD 46.12 Mn in the corresponding quarter last year, a rise of 1.4% and 2.9% respectively
  • Signed new deals worth USD 12.14 Mn
  • Improvement in utilization from 72.7% last quarter to 74.1% this quarter contributed to better margins
  • EPS for the quarter at INR 3.57

The Company declared operating revenues of INR 3,083.52 Mn for the quarter, compared to revenues of INR 2,975.55 Mn in the previous quarter and INR 2,796.67 Mn in the corresponding quarter last year reflecting a growth of 3.6% q-o-q and 10.3% y-o-y. The Company’s revenue excluding its joint venture company rose to INR 2,245.86 Mn, a growth of 3.9% from INR 2,162.31 Mn in Q1FY16 and 9.2% from INR 2,056.18 Mn in Q2FY15. The Company’s EBITDA at INR 528.59 Mn showed a marked improvement of 27.0% q-o-q and 22.3% y-o-y.

Mr. Manu Parpia, Managing Director & CEO said, “We have had an exceptional quarter, with significant improvements in profitability for Geometric excluding our joint venture. This is the result of a concerted effort to improve our margins so as to build a sustainable enterprise. We continue to witness growth opportunities across all our verticals, which we believe will enable us to improve the quality of revenues, while continuing in our endeavor to improve our margins”.

The company had a total employee strength of about 4800 employees as of September 30, 2015, including its subsidiaries.

For one Florida business it played a major roll in leveraging success and business expansion. SE Model Products in Miami, Florida decided to share their story: “We started SE Model Products 3 years ago with the purpose of importing and selling gasoline engines for large scale radio controlled model airplanes, a passion we had since we were kids. We researched companies overseas that would manufacture with our trade brand “SE-Engines” and we found a Chinese manufacturer willing to brand their engines with our name, and with certain specifications we needed for our market and quality standards.”

“After a period of not being extremely happy with the response of the public, just because the product is Chinese, we decided it was time to find a way to manufacture them here in the US, so we started researching equipment, methods, suppliers and so on, and decided we needed a milling machine to make most of the components. We did not have any machining experience, but we went ahead and purchased a HAAS Vertical.

Two or three months after, we received the machine. A huge piece of equipment installed in our facilities, and we barely knew anything about it from what the installer and trainer from Haas taught us… mainly how to switch it on and off!”

Bobcadcam_se-model-products-haas-cnc-milling“We found someone willing to teach us the basics, and at that point we realized we had to be way more proficient than an apprentice to manufacture high precision engines even if they are only toys, we want to offer the best quality and performance, nothing less. We had to find a way through which we could acquire experience and knowledge, and at the same time generate some form of income to support our operation until we were ready to manufacture for ourselves, so we signed up with MFG.com, a firm that connects suppliers with buyers, and started quoting on various jobs with the help of our instructor, and started getting some awarded. We created the DBA “SE Machine Works” for the purpose. Our instructor came, programmed the CAM for the orders we were getting, gave us a list of tooling needed, and set up the works for production. All this after hours, since he has a day job. We spend interminable hours at night setting up, testing, etc., and we really weren’t participating in the process more than as observers. More so, our profits, if any, went to pay for the instructor/programmer’s time, and our goal of becoming proficient seemed to be getting further and further away, even though we were learning a lot of strategies for machining, tool usage, machine capabilities and limitations, materials, and mainly all there is to know about basic machining processes. But just acquiring knowledge on its own tends to be discouraging, when so much time is involved and no reward is reached.”

“At a point, a year ago, we decided to buy and learn BobCAD-CAM, so we purchased the software and the training videos. We sat down and watched the videos in their entirety and researched what we couldn’t grasp or understand to be sure we had it right. Whenever we needed to ask BobCAD anything, they were right there to answer and help and that really helped. One week later, we were making parts! We started recreating parts our programmer had done before, to compare results, and then we jumped into making parts for our customers –no matter how complicated, we found ways with BobCAD. Since, we haven’t looked back. We are confident we can make any part we quote on, and we know the results we are going to get with BobCAD are going to be excellent. BobCAD-CAM cnc software gives us starting points to figure feeds and speeds for our tools and materials, offers us many strategies for machining, and its support is second to none. From 20 hour setups per job with our programmer, we went to setups of less than 2 hours for very complex parts and much shorter for simple ones and we do them ourselves! We are generating cash flow through work for other companies, which range from automotive to medical, through armories, consumer and educational manufacturers, and we are tackling any job our equipment can make. In the meantime, we are perfecting the designs for our engines, machining our prototypes and testing, and once we have the quality we want, we will come out with engines made completely in the US, with great performance and affordability.”

BobCAD-CAM is a software that is extremely easy to learn and use, really intuitive and with a support department that leaves absolutely nothing to wish for. Always preoccupied with improving their customers’ experience, publishing videos and blogs on different options and strategies and making sure their customers have the best alternatives available.

Delcam has launched the 2015 release of its PowerMILL Robot software for the programming of robots for multi-axis machining operations. The new release enables manual and CNC programming to be combined in a single program so providing the maximum programming flexibility. Other enhancements include improved collision checking, automatic avoidance of wrist singularities and the ability to generate robot programs from tape files produced in other CAM software.

PowerMILL Robot also benefits from the many enhancements made in recent releases of PowerMILL, in particular the Vortex strategy for high-efficiency area clearance. In addition, the range of robots supported by the system has been increased so that it now includes KUKA, ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa Motoman, Stäubli, Hyundai, Comau, Kawasaki Robot, Nachi and Universal Robots equipment, in all cases eliminating any need for third-party translation software.

The new functionality in the 2015 release allows users to duplicate in the virtual environment teach-and-learn programming of the robot for linking moves. The model robot on the computer can be ‘jogged’ between positions where machining is to take place, in a similar way to the movement of the arm in the real environment. The programmed linking moves can then be integrated with the cutting moves to give the complete sequence of operations.

This approach will be necessary in any cases where there are additional objects in the real world that are not included in the CAD model of the part to be machined, such as the clamps or fixture being used to hold the item. In other cases, the user might prefer to move up and over the part, rather than moving around it, even if that is shorter.

A singularity in robot operation occurs when collinear alignment of two or more axes results in unpredictable robot motion. Singularities must, therefore, be eliminated to maintain smooth, predictable machining. The new release avoids automatically wrist singularities, the most common example of this type of problem.

The improved collision checking in the 2015 release allows the complete NC program to be simulated in one operation so saving considerable time when compared to the previous method of checking each toolpath individually.

Finally, the ability has been added to import existing tape files from other CAM systems. Once imported, the toolpaths can be simulated and post-processed in PowerMILL Robot in the same way as toolpaths from PowerMILL.

PowerMILL Robot makes it as easy to program a robot for machining as it is to program a five-axis machine tool. As a fully-associated application inside PowerMILL, users have access to all the multi-axis machining strategies within PowerMILL and can use all the system’s project management options to manage, store and retrieve data.

With PowerMILL Robot, robots can be programmed for tool-to-part applications, making them ideal for machining large parts, such as composite panels that need to be trimmed, or for part-to-tool applications, such as grinding or linishing. The working area can be extended with linear tracks and rotary tables for even greater flexibility over the size and types of parts that can be manufactured.

At Booth B52 in Hall 4, the developer of CAM/CAD software and postprocessors will present the new 2015.1 version of its hyperMILL CAM solution including the CAD section, hyperCAD®-S, and the hyperMAXX® high-performance cutting module. The new version offers advanced 5axis machining strategies and numerous convenient functions to facilitate operation.

The continuous implementation of new technologies, optimizations of existing strategies and extensions characterize every hyperMILL release. New in Version 2015.1: Measuring probe support has been enhanced by three new measuring methods. The quality assurance processes can be accelerated with the associated measuring cycle. 5axis helical drilling support has been added and 2D Contour machining on 3D model has also been enhanced.

CAD for CAM users
hyperCAD-S, the CAD part of the hyperMILL suite, is specifically designed for CAM users. New functions include Smart-Selector-Technology and new snap options.
