When software engineers at Hurco develop features for the Hurco control powered by WinMax software, they focus on features that will make customers more profitable, according to the company. Additionally, the flexibility of the Hurco control is especially valuable for shops that have a high mix of parts because it is equally powerful for industry standard NC programming as it is for conversational programming.

In order to support large programs that are becoming increasingly common with CAD/CAM and industry standard NC, Hurco recently upgraded the already robust technical hardware specifications to 128-GB Solid State Storage Drive, 4 GB of RAM, and 3,000 bps of processing power.

As for conversational programming, Gerald Roch, co-founder of Hurco, invented this method of user-friendly programming in 1974 and the Hurco engineering team is continually improving it by inventing new features and evolving the user interface. For example, Hurco has introduced many 5-sided conversational features that make it possible to program at the control on a 5-axis machining center without a CAM system. Transform Plane is one of the key features that eases the transition from a 3-axis machining center to a 5-axis machining center to manufacture 5-sided parts because it essentially changes programming on a 5-axis machining center back to 2.5D programming that is used on a 3-axis machine. The machinist simply establishes the initial part origin and programs the first side of the part. Then, he enters the axis angle(s) to the next side, programs the features on that side of the part and tells the control the axis angle(s) to the next side. After following those steps for each side of the part, Transform Plane does the rest, calculating the tilting and rotating required.

“Hurco engineers have focused on the development of 5-sided programming features like Transform Plane because the fastest way for shops to instantly increase their profit margins on existing parts is to transition from 3-axis machining to a 5-sided machining process on a 5-axis VMC. It’s been a major initiative at Hurco since 2008 to make sure that the Hurco control leads the industry in making this transition to 5-sided machining as easy as possible in an effort to help customers be more profitable,” said a company spokesperson.

Another control feature that shops of all sizes find valuable is NC/Conversational Merge because it combines NC programming with conversational programming. With NC/Conversational Merge, the machinist can call up an NC program, and apply popular conversational features, such as pattern operations, scaling, tool probing, and part probing, to G-Code programs.

USA’s leading CNC machine manufacturer Hurco is expanding its presence in the country by opening another technical centre at Pune in Maharashtra, India. The inauguration ceremony held on August 31, 2016 at Hurco Technical Centre, Chinchwad. This is the company’s Second tech centre in the country.

The tech centre will primarily focus on demonstrating the capability of High Performance High speed Vertical Machining Centres from Takumi line…Hurco Companies Inc., acquired Takumi Machinery Co Ltd., in 2015. Charles Boyce, owner of Boyce Technologies in New York, broke the Hurco USA record for the largest single purchase of Hurco CNC machines in the division’s history. Boyce Technologies designs and manufactures security and communications equipment for the mass transit market, including emergency response systems, intercom systems, security alarm systems, radio and wireless networks, and customer information display systems. Their newest system, called Help Point, is what subway riders in New York City use to get information and to get help when needed.

Founded in 2007, the company has grown from one employee, the owner Charles Boyce, to 60. Boyce Technologies received the 2015 Inc. Top 5000 Honors with a rank of #166 due to its 3-year growth rate of 2,442%. Inc. also ranked Boyce #16 of the Top New York Companies, and #3 for Top Manufacturing Companies.

Charles Boyce purchased his first Hurco CNC machine from Hurco distributor Brooks Associates in 2008 before he had a commercial building. “The first VMX30 was installed in the living room. We had to cut the ceiling joists away to allow the Z travel to retract fully,” said Boyce.

With this latest order, the Hurco fleet of CNC machines at Boyce Technologies numbers 21. Boyce credits the ability to choose the best manufacturing technology as one of the key components that has made his company successful in developing technology solutions for its customers in the mass transit sector. Specifically, the Hurco control powered by WinMax® provides the versatility required to go from concept to finished part. The control also has the specifications to handle large program part files with a solid state drive that has 2GB of RAM, a 2 GHz processor, 64GB hard drive, and Hurco’s patented motion system, UltiMotion, that provides up to 10,000 blocks of lookahead.

In addition to the original 3-axis VMX30, seven Hurco VMX42i mills, five VMX84i mills, two high-speed mills, and a lathe with live tooling, Boyce has invested in high-end 5-axis technology from Hurco with his purchase of two VMX42SRTi swivel head 5-axis mills and three trunnion style 5-axis mills. Hurco recently released the MAX5 control console, which features numerous ergonomic design features focused on operator usability. “Our trust in Hurco has led us to purchase the largest quantity of Max 5 controllers in the world, making our new LIC (Long Island City) production center one of the most advanced production centers in America,” said Boyce.

“Maximum usability is the foundation of the new control from Hurco that is referred to as Max5,” said Maggie Smith, Marketing Manager for Hurco Companies, Inc. “The numerous ergonomic features are a testament to the collaborative relationship we share with our customers, who tested preliminary designs of MAX5 and gave their feedback during multiple usability tests we hosted during the development process. We incorporated more than 80 changes based on those usability tests. That’s why we feel comfortable saying the MAX5 control was designed and built for machinists: customer refined and customer approved,” said Smith.

Key features of the Hurco MAX5 control include a keypad that is adjustable up to 90 degrees, a 19-inch LCD screen with touch-screen navigation that includes a second folding auxiliary screen with die-cast stainless hinges, which is standard on most models in the company’s 65-model lineup.

The verification graphics screen has been redesigned so the machinist can customize what information appears: full screen verification graphics, digital readout (DRO), or both. The new full screen DRO or Mini-DRO can be selected instead of the graphics screen to best suit the task at hand, be it programming, machining or concurrent operations (running the current job while simultaneously programming another job). Additionally, the new Quick Menu minimizes multiple button presses so the machinist can quickly access the information needed.

The Hurco MAX5 control has three remote jog options: standard, LCD, and LCD wireless. The LCD units allow the machinist to set up tools and parts right from the remote jog unit. All jog units feature a large 70 mm hand wheel with finger cup spinner, graspable over molded body, integrated flashlight, magnetic base, and T-slot tongue.

In addition to the ergonomic design of the control, intuitive navigation, and three remote jog unit options, Hurco has included new WinMax® software features that will make customers more productive and more profitable whether they use conversational programming on the shop floor or Industry Standard NC.

“One of the new WinMax® software features of the MAX 5 control is AdaptiPathTM, a conversational pocketing feature used in high-end CAD/CAM packages that increases metal removal rates, supports rest machining, reduces cycle time, and extends tool life due to controlled engagement cutting. AdaptiPath creates a smooth tool path motion, controls chip load, provides constant tool engagement, and also includes rest machining. With rest machining, larger diameter tools can be used to efficiently remove material, followed by a rest machining pass that uses a smaller cutter to access the areas of the feature that the larger tool couldn’t access. The faster material removal significantly reduces cycle time, especially for pocketing applications. Our test cut results showed that AdaptiPath was 60% faster: 02:21 with AdaptiPath compared to 06:09 without it,” Smith said.

“The Hurco MAX5 is also equipped with features that benefit NC shops, such as the new Job List feature that lets you group files together and run them sequentially without operator intervention. Job List promotes automation, lights-out machining, program stitching, file bundling, and adaptive processes,” Smith continued.

Hurco Companies, Inc. (Nasdaq:HURC), a leader in the development and manufacture of machine tools with integrated control technologies for the worldwide metal cutting market, announced recently that, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, it acquired substantially all of the assets of U.S.-based Milltronics Manufacturing Company, Inc. d/b/a Milltronics CNC Machines (Milltronics). Founded in 1973, Milltronics designs and manufactures CNC knee mills, toolroom bed mills, vertical machining centers, combination lathes, slant-bed lathes, horizontal machining centers, and bed mills.

In addition, Hurco announced recently that its subsidiary Hurco Manufacturing Limited (Hurco Ltd.) entered into an agreement to acquire the business, technology, goodwill and operating assets of Takumi Machinery Co., Ltd., a Taiwanese company founded in 1988 (Takumi). Takumi designs and manufactures CNC vertical machining centers, double column machining centers, high speed bridge machines and other machine tools, with sales primarily in Taiwan, China and Europe. Subject to approval of the acquisition by the shareholders of Takumi at a meeting to be held before the end of July 2015, and to customary closing conditions, Hurco expects the closing of the acquisition to occur by the end of July 2015. Liberty Diversified International, Inc. (LDI) is the sole shareholder of Milltronics and the owner of approximately 98% of the outstanding shares of Takumi. LDI has agreed to cause the required Takumi shareholder approval to be obtained.

Mr. Gregory Volovic, President of Hurco, said:

“Takumi and Milltronics machine tool products and end user markets are highly complementary to Hurco machine tool products and end user markets, in that approximately 60% of Milltronics and Takumi’s machine tool lines are unique, will expand our consolidated product range and customer base, and will accelerate emerging market penetration. For example, unlike Hurco and Milltronics machine tools, Takumi machines are equipped with industrial controls from Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi or Heidenhain for high-volume manufacturing environments. The combined Hurco, Milltronics and Takumi businesses will represent one of the most comprehensive product portfolios in the machine tool industry, with more than 150 different models. We believe that these two acquisitions should be accretive to Hurco’s consolidated earnings in its 2016 fiscal year.”

Hurco India Pvt Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the leading USA-based Hurco Inc inaugurated a new technical center in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in India on April 16. The inauguration ceremony was held at RV Machine Tools, Jaganathan Industrial Estate, Coimbatore in the presence of dignitaries from the various industries.

The lighting of lamp and the formal inauguration was done by John Donlon, Executive Vice President – International Sales & Service, Hurco Inc. The opening ceremony was followed by an Open House showcasing of products in application area of die/mould, aerospace and medical Implants.

Please tell us about some of your latest launches?
We showcased our new SR 5-Axis/ vertical/swivel machining centres for the first time in India at IMTEX. It was more of technology that we showcased than a machine…. we showcased the power of Hurco controller. Hurco controller helps to increase the utilisation of the machine. How? When batches of components are to be machined, CAM support is required for preparing the program of each type, but, by using a Hurco machine, output from CAM Station can be increased since many parts requiring 2D cutting can be programmed using Hurco controller adopting Conversational Programming by transferring the Auto CAD file…..that includes even Trochoidal Machining used for aerospace parts, especially Frame Machining or 5 Face Machining for actuators etc. or say Bone Plate Machining for Medical Implants company!!

Reducing the program preparation time increases the machine utilization & also the utilisation of the CAM.

What kinds of changes do you see revolving around the CNC technology in the near future?
I would say CNC controllers will be playing a more vital role than the machine per say. According to me, we can expect more innovation when it comes to the controller technology as compared to the machine. In terms of controller technology, people are working to make it better and intelligent continuously. Till what level it will grow, totally depends on the demand. At present, probably we are the only company showcasing this kind of technology, but unfortunately not everyone is able to understand its potential.

Apart from controllers, you can expect to see more number of axes coming in, but if you don’t have right programming capability you will not be able to utilise the machine properly. I feel, CNC Controllers are going to witness the maximum amount of innovation compared to the machine itself.

Do you see any demand for such technology in India? If yes, from where do you see the maximum demand coming from?
As I mentioned earlier, people are not able to understand the potential of this technology today. Having said that, I would also like to add that as we grow and create awareness about it, the scenario will be lot better. Today it is very difficult to find a person who knows how to use conversational programming, so we try to educate the customer…. I am sure it will be accepted in the market soon and show positive results.

For Hurco, we see our usefulness in the field of machining of Die Mold, Aerospace, Medical Implants & Devices & Precision Component of batch quantity

What are the challenges that you face in the Indian market?
We admit we are somewhat late to enter India, but we are trying our best to create the place in the Indian market. We have machines suitable for niche segments like aerospace, medical implants & devices, die & mould and we are competitive in terms of price and technology. Our biggest challenge is to build the brand and penetrate into the market.

We are investing a lot in manpower, facilities and infrastructure and with time we are seeing the difference too.

In recent time we see that south eastern countries like S Korea, Taiwan are getting stronger with their competitive pricing. Are they threat for companies like Hurco?
Every time when you have a new supplier, it is threat for the existing ones. We try to move into the areas where others cannot compete us. We try to offer the solution instead of just a machine….which may not be the case with many of the machine tool companies who are offering their product in Indian market….availability of local expertise in the area of customer’s use should make all the difference.

When BAW Precision Engineering Ltd emerged from the global downturn under new ownership in July 2010, the primary aim for the new directors of the Swansea Valley company was to build the order book and re-establish the subcontractors’ prestigious reputation.

The re-emergence of one of Wales leading subcontractors commenced less than a year ago with the introduction of new management, employee training and a lean manufacturing philosophy. These building blocks have been supported with new sales and marketing structure that can now promote the new capabilities provided by the subcontractor’s latest asset, a new 5axis machining centre from Hurco.

Already boasting marquee customers such as Biomet, The Royal Mint, Honda, Continental Teves, Walkers Foods, Borg Warner and Bosch to name a few, the diverse customer base sees BAW work in the medical, aerospace, automotive, power generation and hydraulic sectors among others. This extensive subcontract expertise is supplemented by an internal department that boasts one of the UK’s few specialist concept to component automation machinery builders.

With both departments increasingly winning new business, a new machining centre was a necessity. As BAW Precision’s Operations Manager, Mr Andrew Hoseasons comments: “The new ownership and internal developments at BAW has delivered an influx of new business and despite already having 3+2 axis set-ups on our existing machines, we acknowledged that we needed full simultaneous 5-axis capability to drive the company forward. We have identified a need in the marketplace and the new Hurco will be our first step to filling this gap in the market.”

When Pontardawe based BAW entered the market for a new 5-axis CNC machining centre, the fact that the company already has nine Hurco machining centres purchased over a period of 20 years, influenced the decision. As Mr Hoseasons continues: “Despite having an excellent working relationship with Hurco, we still investigated the marketplace to review and consider alternative suppliers. However, we quickly found that the Hurco VMX30U was the most suitable machine for the type of parts we produce. Additionally, our experience informed us that Hurco machines offer exceptional reliability and user friendliness that is matched by excellent performance and productivity levels.”

Emphasising such points, Mr Richard Gunn, Group Engineering Development Manager of RG Tooling, BAW’s development arm, is keen to highlight the immediate impact of the Hurco VMX30U with its integrated Trunnion table. “At present we are machining toolholders for sister company Eurogrind, a manufacturer of standard and bespoke milling and turning toolholders. The simultaneous 5-axis machining has already slashed production times. Previously, our square shank toolholders underwent three individual set-ups that took 10 minutes each. Added to the set-up times were three machining cycles of 15 minutes each, resulting in a complete part time of 75minutes per toolholder. Now, the new VMX30U only requires one ten minute set-up and one 15 minute machining cycle.”

As one of the first jobs on the new Hurco, BAW are delighted with a time saving of 50 minutes. The company initially expected the VMX30U to deliver productivity gains of 25%; however this one job has delivered a saving that has surpassed 60%. This is credit to the reduced set-ups, efficient 5-axis tool paths and higher speed and feed rate capabilities. To put the saving in perspective, BAW machines the toolholders in batches from 10 to 30 with an annual production exceeding 500 units.

Whilst the production times are being cut, Mr Gunn is keen to emphasise the benefit of the new Ultimax control system on the new acquisition, stating: “We have always found the Hurco control system easy to use, but the latest version takes user friendliness a step further. Each function box offers a foot note prompt that tells the operator exactly what to do, making errors difficult to make. From a productivity standpoint, we specified the twin-screen control. This enables us to machine a part with the existing program running on one screen whilst the operator can simultaneously program the next part on the second screen. As the majority of jobs passing through the machine will be small batches of 1 to 10-offs, this will drastically reduce programming times and improve operator productivity, especially as 90% of jobs are programmed on the shop floor.”

“Other features on the Hurco Ultimax control that already benefit us, is the ‘surface finish feature’ that improves cycle times by automatically increasing or reducing speeds and feeds according to the cycle. Additionally, the new control has a transfer plane command that takes the trigonometry calculations out of any programming. It also enables us to merge NC code with intuitive 5-sided conversational programming, further simplifying and speeding up the programming process,” continues Mr Gunn.

One of the niche markets BAW is targeting is the oil & gas and hydraulic valve sector. The company set this strategy in motion when specifying the VMX30U that was installed in February 2011. The trunnion table with a 420mm face plate accommodates a diverse range of chucks and is ideal for producing complex valve components. As Mr Hoseason concludes: “We identified a gap in the marketplace and acquired the ideal machine for such complex components. This acquisition has enabled BAW to expand its target markets. When we promoted our extended capabilities and new machine at the recent Southern Manufacturing Exhibition, we had a major success winning over 15 new customers and significant orders in the process. Looking to the future, we will be implementing AS: 9100 to get a stronger foothold in the aerospace market. We will also be adding to our plant list – and with immediate impact of the Hurco VMX30U, there is little doubt we will be specifying Hurco machines in the future.”
