Future General Electric Co. customers will benefit from innovative and reliable products with reduced risk and unplanned downtime as never before thanks to a new agreement between the company and ANSYS.

The new agreement expands GE’s use of ANSYS engineering simulation solutions to accommodate its November 2015 acquisition of Alstom’s Power and Grid businesses. It enables GE to realize synergistic savings through tool consolidation, while still growing the number of ANSYS solutions used in product development and analysis, product quality, and testing. This use of Simulation Driven Product Development™ has already reduced cycle times by 33 percent, an even further reduction is expected as a result of this investment.

The deal also expands beyond product development into operations, a key element to GE’s Predix Industrial Internet platform. Predix is the world’s only industrial cloud offering designed specifically for industrial data and analytics across such industries as aviation, transportation, oil and gas, and healthcare. Organizations use this platform to create innovative Industrial Internet applications that turn real-time operational data into insights for better and faster decision making while maximizing machine efficiency.

ANSYS’ industry-leading portfolio of engineering simulation software will collaborate with GE Power Engineering to pilot “simulation as a service,” enabling companies to analyze the performance of smart machines in real-world operating conditions, then make confident predictions about future performance. Physics-based simulation with big data analytics and industrial devices augmented with embedded intelligence can reduce risk, avoid unplanned downtime and speed up new product development.

ANSYS, the global leader of engineering simulation software, announced today that it has acquired substantially all the assets of Delcross Technologies, a premier developer of computational electromagnetic simulation and radio frequency system analysis software. The acquisition will enable ANSYS users to understand how antennas interact within their operating environments and how this behavior affects the system’s overall ability to transmit and receive data without interference. Terms of the deal, which closed earlier this week, were not disclosed.

Driven by development for the Internet of Things, antennas are becoming increasingly pervasive across industries and products. Autonomous vehicles, smart metering, drones, bio-sensors and wearable electronics are just a few examples of products that now use one or more antennas and wireless systems to provide such services as voice, data communications, sensing and navigation. But these antennas and other electronic components can disrupt the operation of devices, a phenomenon known as electromagnetic interference, or EMI. Delcross’ solutions identify and help mitigate EMI issues.

“ANSYS will bring Delcross’ industry-leading technology to a broader market and further strengthen our leadership in antenna design, wireless system performance and EMI prediction,” said Jim Cashman, ANSYS president and CEO. “The combined ANSYS high-frequency solution will deliver an unequalled portfolio for wireless system design. New update of the market-leading engineering simulation platform delivers advancements for manufacturers to spur innovation and increase productivity.

Using the newly released ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS) 16.2, engineers can now create virtual prototypes of complete systems, enabling them to make significant strides in innovation and to unleash next-generation products within their industries.

As products – from automobiles to smartphones to wearable technology – become more complex and development times continue to shrink, the need to simulate whole systems grows. Through simulation, engineers can take full advantage of the growing number of opportunities presented by the rapid innovation of materials, electronics and processes. While some manufacturers have optimized the design of components or smaller sub-systems, until today’s ANSYS release, no comprehensive solution has existed for simulating complete systems. The complexity within systems arises from the challenges of connecting the individual pieces to ensure they work together as designed. By developing complete virtual prototypes, leading companies can jump-start their innovation and leapfrog the competition.

“ANSYS customers are already solving component and sub-system problems using the most advanced software available. “Understanding how the whole system works is critical to developing an optimized design in minimal time,” said Jim Shaikh, founder of yoomi, which creates self-warming baby bottle products. “We perform a series of design studies using the simulation software and utilize the results to build a simpler analytical model to crunch through thousands of possible geometric alternatives.”

Part of this new simulation approach is made possible by enhancements to ANSYS Simplorer, a comprehensive platform for multidisciplinary systems modeling. In this new release, Simplorer can now assemble and simulate electrical, electronic, thermo-fluid, mechanical and embedded software components. The methodology offers advanced 3-D precision when needed, as well as reduced-order modeling for verifying multi-domain system performance interaction.

AIM Advancements Expand Multiphysics Reach of Systems Engineering

ANSYS 16.2 offers significant advancements in systems engineering through ANSYS AIM, the first integrated and comprehensive multiphysics simulation environment designed for engineers, which was introduced earlier this year. AIM has rapidly developed and ANSYS 16.2 represents its next step forward. Among the many new multiphysics and systems capabilities are heat transfer and thermal-stress, gas flows, and structural deformation and stress.

Optimizing heat transfer and thermal-stress is a critical design issue for many types of industry applications, such as heat exchangers, thermal mixing valves, engine components and electronic devices. In such applications, an accurate prediction of the temperature and heat transfer in both the fluid and solid regions is essential to accurately predict the thermal and thermal-stress performance of the design. AIM now includes new features to support a comprehensive conjugate heat transfer analysis and one-way fluid-structure interaction to compute thermal-stress.

Predicting the correct flow field for compressible gas flows in the subsonic and transonic range is a critical design issue for many different applications. Industry applications include – high speed flow over airfoils or nacelles, and high-pressure flows in natural gas pipelines and valves. AIM now supports an accurate prediction of the flow field, variation of the gas density and thermal behavior for all compressible flow applications, which is critical for predicting the performance of a design.

In a range of structural applications, nonlinear contact is required to accurately predict deformation and stress in assemblies where multiple components are connected by interference fits, bolts, welds or are otherwise joined together. AIM includes robust nonlinear contact simulation using advanced solver technology for surface-to-surface contact combined with automatic contact surface detection and automatic nonlinear solution control.

AIM makes all of these simulation applications available to experts within one physics domain, as well as product designers who need to span multiple domains, making simulation more broadly applicable across different engineering disciplines.

Customization Critical in Systems Engineering

Due to the complexity of systems engineering, workflow and automation are critical. ANSYS 16.2 automates the overall approach to developing embedded software systems for avionics. A new systems development product, ANSYS SCADE System Avionics Package™, simplifies systems design capabilities for the aerospace and defense industries. It delivers out-of-the-box templates for compliant design systems that are compliant with standard avionics protocols and operating systems, including: ARINC 653, ARINC 429 and AFDX configurations.

To accommodate the needs of a wide varieties of industries that require more customized workflows, ANSYS has added new capabilities in the Workbench platform and ANSYS Customization Toolkit (ACT) to customize simulation tools to accelerate the overall design process and workflows. ACT wizards provide customized simulation instructions and user interfaces to integrate any application in Workbench. These wizards span workflows across applications and guide the user through a single set of instructions.

Custom templates, as a part of the ACT enhancements, are also available in AIM to provide an authoring tool for highly automated and detailed simulation processes. These templates span the entire AIM workflow from geometry to results, as well as across all physics that may be a part of the simulation process. This critical capability enables multi-disciplinary teams to work effectively together and to deliver innovative advances across all disciplines of product design.

At EASTEC 2015 the latest version of VERICUT, V7.3, will be featured in CGTech’s booth: 5344. VERICUT CNC machine simulation, verification and optimization software simulates all types of CNC machining. It operates independently, but can also be integrated with leading CAM systems.

A common feature of all recent releases of the software has been the focus on full integration with the CAD/CAM and machine tool industry. As a result VERICUT is now at the heart of the CNC manufacturing process. Machine simulation with VERICUT detects collisions and near-misses between all machine tool components such as axis slides, heads, turrets, rotary tables, spindles, tool changers, fixtures, workpieces, cutting tools, and other user-defined objects. Machine movements can even be simulated while stepping or playing backwards in VERlCUT‘s Review Mode.

With VERICUT Reviewer, shop floor personnel, suppliers, customers, and other production engineers can view animations of the CNC machining process. It is a stand-alone viewer that does not use a license that can play forward and backward while removing and replacing material. The Reviewer files can also be played on an iPad.

Cornell University’s College of Engineering and ANSYS are training future engineers worldwide to become proficient in engineering simulation solutions. Through the SimCafe wiki, which was developed in part with National Science Foundation support, students at Cornell and elsewhere are preparing themselves for success by learning to use – for free – the same tools utilized by thousands of engineers in virtually every industry. ANSYS donated the simulation software for the development of the site.

SimCafe has helped integrate simulation into 12 mechanical and aerospace engineering courses at Cornell. Outside of the university, SimCafe has attracted more than 130,000 visitors from more than 150 countries including users from over 170 educational institutions.

“The effective integration of industry-standard simulation tools with traditional engineering education makes learning more practical and engaging,” said Rajesh Bhaskaran, director of engineering simulation at Cornell’s Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. “It also gives students unprecedented opportunities to learn in a self-paced, hands-on manner not only simulation but also core engineering concepts.  This helps us better prepare students for the modern engineering workplace.”

A series of learning modules is available for free online and runs with ANSYS software. Using SimCafe, students engage in a systematic process for checking results, including comparing to their hand calculations. Many of the SimCafe modules juxtapose traditional textbook content with the numerical approach that ANSYS software uses. SimCafe includes a template that contributors can use to create new tutorials for the site. The template ensures that tutorials follow a standard format and use best practices in instruction even though they are developed by different authors.

“When I arrived at Cornell a decade ago, Dr. Bhaskaran and I collaborated on integrating ANSYS® Fluent® into our Intermediate Fluid Mechanics class,” said Lance R. Collins, dean of engineering at Cornell. “The experiment was incredibly successful, as students found they could more easily grasp difficult concepts by exploring them with the software. SimCafe takes that experiment to a whole new level. I am thrilled to now see our early success replicated across so many different classes and projects worldwide.”

Corporations and universities leverage engineering simulation to solve difficult engineering challenges in healthcare, industrial equipment and vehicle engines.

A company developing new spinal instruments to reduce the risks of scoliotic surgery and a university’s examination of how a leather back turtle would weather climate change were among the five winning entries in the annual ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS) Hall of Fame image competition.

The contest, which highlights some of the most complex engineering challenges, gives ANSYS users the opportunity to showcase their simulation work by producing eye-grabbing images and animation. For the second year in a row, 2014 submissions were divided into two categories – corporate and academic – and allowed ANSYS to select multiple “best-in-class” winners from each category.

The corporate winners are:

  • Andritz Hydro, a global supplier of electro-mechanical systems and services for hydropower plants. Andritz used ANSYS solutions to develop a lighter-weight valve that replaces welds with bolts with controlled tightening, reducing design time and production costs – while increasing valve sales.
  • BRP, a world leader in the design, manufacturing, distribution and marketing of motorized recreational vehicles and powersports engines. Using ANSYS, BRP engineers reduced external forces on an engine’s gearcase and observed the effects those forces had on the internal gearcase components. As a result, the company solved surface degradation and speed reduction problems.
  • Spinologics, a leader in the development of next-generation medical devices. Spinologics used simulations generated by ANSYS® Mechanical™ to perform patient-specific analyses of scoliotic spine procedures before surgery, which led to the development of a new spinal instrumentation system that could reduce the risks of scoliotic surgery.

The academic winners are:

  • National Taiwan University of Science and Technology researchers used ANSYS® Workbench™ to calculate how variations in bone quality, patient geometry and even posture can affect the performance of corrective bone and tissue implants.
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers used ANSYS solutions to model a swimming leatherback turtle’s flipper stroke in four zones and four phases to determine the energy expended by the turtle while swimming. This could help predict where this type of sea turtle might survive, as its environment is changing due to global warming.

“Organizations in every industry – particularly in healthcare – are increasingly leveraging simulation to speed products to market and to reduce development costs,” said Sin Min Yap, vice president of marketing at ANSYS. “We see the Hall of Fame submissions growing more complex and sophisticated each year. This year’s applicants truly pushed the boundaries of simulation. These best-in-class winners illustrated how simulation can make a clear and lasting difference in research and product development.”
