The negative NRM turning chip breaker is for roughing and semi-roughing of stainless steel and low alloy steel. Launched under the company’s Pramet brand, NRM is available for both double-sided and large single-sided inserts.

It has been designed for continuous and mass levels of production, offering consistent performance and high feeds. However, the NRM has excellent chip-breaking properties and can also be used for roughing of stainless steel even at lower feeds, without the risk of work hardening.

Its positive geometry with a wide T-land offers a broad depth of cut and promotes good chip evacuation in a wide number of applications. The chip breaker is available in grades T7325, T7335 and T9315.

The NRM enhances Pramet’s existing range of turning chip breakers for stainless steel, including the NMR for medium to roughing operations, NM for medium turning and NF for finishing to medium turning.

In a recent test, machining M group material DIN 1.4301, the NRM on the CNMG insert with T7335 grade, achieved a 60% longer tool life than a competitor equivalent.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has developed a new chip breaker for bar peeling of stainless steel, steel and super alloys.

Suitable for roughing to finishing operations, the MM chip breaker has been designed with a wide, strong T-land to offer increased stability of the cutting edge.

This gives the Pramet chip breaker good chip control with an even spread of the cutting forces, making it suitable for high feeds in heavy conditions.

There are three cutting edge options: S01 is for hard materials, S02 for medium hardness and S03 have a stabilized facet on the main cutting edge for soft materials.

The MM chip breaker is available for use with the LNGF inserts, for roughing to finishing, RNGH inserts for roughing and WNGF inserts for roughing to finishing. It is suitable for use with the grades T7325, T9315 and T6310.

Dormer Pramet has extended its Hydra range of replaceable carbide head drills by introducing a new option specifically for cast iron.

The R970 head has been added to the existing Hydra program, which already includes types for steel (R950) and stainless steel (R960). All three heads are suitable for use on the existing range of High Speed Steel drill bodies.

A key feature of the Dormer branded range is that it offers easy and quick head changes, without the need to remove the body from the machine, minimizing interruptions to the production process.

Available in 3xD, 5xD and 8xD lengths, all Hydra drills incorporate coolant holes to improve cutting efficiency and swarf evacuation. The exact fit between head and body maximizes tool rigidity for superior hole-accuracy and precise tolerances.

Each head type is made from micrograin carbide, providing an excellent combination of hardness and toughness. Its Titanium Aluminium Nitride based coating offers high resistance to oxidisation and wear, promoting additional protection in abrasive materials like cast iron.

A strong corner design increases stability during drilling and reduces the forces encountered when exiting the work-piece. This improves surface quality and prevents ‘exit burst’ which can occur when drilling granular materials.

The 140° split point geometry in the Hydra range provides good centering capabilities and low thrust forces when drilling most materials, resulting in a more efficient operation that requires less machine power.

A versatile new range of milling cutters and inserts form an important part of Dormer Pramet’s first product launch of 2017.

Expanding the company’s comprehensive range of milling cutters, the new addition adds an adaptable option to support a wide range of insert shapes and operations from roughing to finishing.

The new SOD05 cutter, developed under the Pramet brand, reduces tool change-over time and inventory costs with its universal pocket capable of carrying octagonal, round and square inserts.

It means that the user-friendly cutter, available in a wide range of diameters from 32 – 125mm, can perform face milling, shoulder milling, slotting, plunging and ramping in steel, stainless steel, cast iron and non-ferrous materials.

To support the new cutter, Dormer Pramet has added to its range of octagonal (OD), round (RD) and square (SD) inserts. The OD insert has eight cutting edges and low cutting forces, promoting an economical option for face milling, while the RD inserts are suitable for high feed roughing, shallow profiling and ramping.

Its SD inserts have four cutting edges and offers a 90° option for square shoulder milling, providing high depths of cut up to 10mm. All types of inserts have the same radial and axial positions of edges – allowing for easier CNC programming and manual operations.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has announced a new range of small diameter cutters (12 – 40mm) to offer further economical milling options. The cutters, which have a high number of teeth to improve productivity, are ideally suited for turn-milling.

To support this new cutter, a range of economical SOMT 05 inserts have been developed. With four cutting edges for general machining, the single sided inserts offer depth of cut up to 4.5mm.

The inserts feature a sharp geometry with narrow positive T-land and support shoulder milling, face milling, shallow slot milling and plunging in steel, stainless steel and cast iron.

Dormer Pramet has launched a new generation of solid carbide multi-application drills to deliver a greater level of performance and economy.

Force X is the new family name given to the Dormer range of drills, which replaces its MPX assortment.

All existing product codes have been retained to ensure a smooth transition, but the incoming drills have received a significant upgrade, including new geometry, corner design and edge preparation.

The improvements apply to the 3xD R457 and R458 and the 5xD R453 and R454, bringing them in-line with the newly launched 8xD R459.

Retaining their Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN) coating, all drills continue to be suitable for use across a wide range of machines and materials, such as stainless steel, alloy steels, cast iron and non-ferrous materials. This makes the Force X range an ideal choice for general engineering and sub-contract environments.

Dormer Pramet 1As part of the enhancements, each of the Force X drills now include Continuously Thinned Web (CTW) technology, which provides a very strong web design, reducing thrust requirements during drilling.

They all feature a consistent edge preparation, protecting the cutting area and preventing premature chipping and flaking. A strong corner design across the range also increases stability and reduces the forces encountered when exiting the workpiece.

The micrograin carbide substrate, along with the TiAlN coating, offers high wear resistance and increased tool life, while the 140° split point geometry provides precise centering capabilities and low thrust forces.

Offering both solid and coolant feed options to improve cutting efficiency and swarf evacuation, the new Force X range offers high productivity and improved performance.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has launched new solid carbide spotting drills and pre-tapping drills.

Developed for fast and accurate spotting, the R6011 drill can be used in hydraulic and shrink fit holders when machining a range of work-piece materials. It offers 90° self-centering point geometry and TiAlN coating for increased tool life.

Providing a drill and chamfer in one, the R7131 reduces tool-cycle time and inventory. Available in specific pre-tapping sizes for metric threads, it includes coolant feed holes to improve swarf control and performance, while the TiAlN coating increases tool life.

The 2017 indexable publication is the company’s largest in its history, containing more than 1,000 pages of products and machining advice for a wide range of applications.

It is the first regular edition where all Pramet turning, milling and hole-making tools have been presented together in one printed, multi-lingual publication, for numerous countries.

In total more than 60,000 copies have been produced, in 20 different languages.

As well as including all the latest new products announced over the last three years, significant improvements have been made to support easier use of the catalogue.

To help customers find exactly which product they need in a fast and easy way, various navigators are available. Detailed information to help find the right cutting tool is available directly in the product page, including a set of icons presenting possible tool applications, achievable surface quality and type of cut.

Radek Hudos, marketing and communication manager at Dormer Pramet, said: “This new publication is more than just an update of our older indexable catalogue, which was last published in 2014.

“It is a brand new publication entirely, providing the user with much more detailed information on our products, including advice on choosing the right tool and how to successfully use it.

“We have prioritised the most relevant information to support customers with choosing a product, such as the application area of each insert, grade and suitability for use in specific working conditions. And that is not all. We also include the influences of cutting fluids in continual cut, when to apply cooling and when to avoid it.

“The detail on our inserts is, thanks to a brand new page template, absolutely identical across the whole catalogue. Also, we have tried to make the most important sections, such as the product pages, as universal as possible by keeping them text free. A lot of text has been replaced with easy to understand icons that can be used across multiple languages.”

The new chip breakers – developed under the company’s Pramet brand – target finishing and medium to roughing turning operations in steel and cast iron, high temperature alloys and stainless steel.

Firstly, the NF1 and NF2 positive chip breakers support turning applications in stainless steel. The balanced shape of these new inserts offers excellent chip control, with low cutting forces promoting both high durability and productivity.

The NF1 is a universal chip breaker for finishing to medium machining, peripherally ground to provide a very good surface finish. The versatile NF2 chip breaker incorporates a small stabilizing T-Land and covers a wide range of applications from semi-finishing to light roughing.

Pramet’s new FF2, FM2 and RM3 inserts for steel and cast iron provide very good chip control at low feed and depth of cut with a high quality machined surface finish.

The FF2 chip breaker has a positive rake angle and depth of cut from 0.15mm for fine finishing applications in low carbon steels. The FM2 chip breaker is for finishing to medium machining with depths of cut from 0.2mm. Featuring a protective land, it is suitable for continuous and interrupted operations.

The highly resistant RM3 chip breaker is for roughing applications in steels and suitable for unfavorable machining conditions.

Finally, Pramet’s new SF2 and SF3 positive inserts provide a highly secure and dependable option for turning applications in high temperature alloys. The SF2 chip breaker is for fine turning at the lowest possible feeds, while the SF3 chip breaker with its positive inclined cutting edge supports finishing operations.

Especially effective when used on small and slender components, both inserts offer a sharp cutting edge with minimal radius. This promotes low cutting forces which, in turn, prevents work hardening and ensures a high quality surface finish.

Meanwhile, in addition to the new assortment of inserts, a new grade for turning stainless steels has also been launched.

The T7325 grade becomes the first choice for productive machining of stainless steels. It has been developed to complement the existing T7335 grade, which is recommended for use in unstable machining environments.

Also suitable for interrupted cutting, the latest T7325 grade features a functional gradient substrate and special MT-CVD coating. This combination offers high cutting strength, reduced built-up edge and resistance to the formation of cracks. As a result, the grade provides a high level of operational reliability, performance and tool life.

The new spot weld drills have been specifically designed for drilling out spot welds to release steel panels and sheets. A number of standard sizes are available to suit common spot welds found in the automotive and trailer repair industry.

Manufactured from high speed cobalt (HSS-E), the A723 drill, which has a bronze surface finish, offers high hot hardness to retain a sharp cutting edge under extreme conditions.

A special lip and spur point geometry provides positive centering, while the sharp outer-corners cut the softer material around the spot weld.

The drills, launched under the company’s Dormer brand, feature a strong web for additional strength and improved penetration in tough conditions. Their short flute also gives stability when hand held drilling thin panels and sheet.

Dormer’s High Speed Steel (HSS) sheet metal drills are available in a number of standard sizes to suit common rivets, screws and bolts. Suitable for drilling thin sheet steel and panels, the A123 range features a 120° point geometry with a short flute to provide easy penetration and rigidity in portable applications.

No body clearance further increases stability during drilling and breakthrough to give superior hole quality.

Its thin web at the point provides excellent self-centering properties, while its steam tempered surface improves performance and reduces the chance of built-up edge. A double ended version (A119) is also available.

As part of the launch, several new sets have been added. This includes a ‘compact drill’ set (A087) featuring 19 popular sizes of its TiN coated A002 jobber drill for general purpose drilling, as well as a 19 and 25 piece set containing the A108 HSS quick spiral jobber drill for stainless steel (A188).

Meanwhile, to complement its existing range of center drills, Dormer Pramet has introduced several new designs to further expand the applications covered.

These include a HSS-E range of center drills for tougher materials and environments, a flatted shank version for improved clamping, a long series option for increased reach and a line of solid carbide center drills for hard and abrasive materials.

The new Dormer assortment has been manufactured with a flatted shank for use in custom centering heads specifically to support machining the ends of shafts. Their radius form increases cross sectional strength and therefore reduces the risk of breakage.

Dormer Pramet has announced the introduction of a versatile new line of tools and inserts to support economical shoulder milling applications in a wide variety of materials.

The TNGX10 double-sided triangular inserts – launched under the company’s Pramet brand – offers depth of cut up to 5mm and feature six cutting edges for excellent economy and low machining costs.

A wide range of cutters are available with the new assortment, from 18mm up to 80mm, and with a high number of teeth available – even for small diameters – the cutters provide increased productivity.

The inserts are suitable for numerous materials such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals, as well different applications, including shoulder, face and slot milling, helical interpolation, ramping and progressive plunging.

In a recent product test, face milling M3 stainless steel, the TNGX insert had double the durability, compared to a competitor’s equivalent insert.

To support the new shoulder milling range, Dormer Pramet has also introduced three new positive geometries as part of the company’s second product launch of 2016.

Geometry F has a narrow peripheral land and is suited to light and medium machining for low to medium carbon steel. Geometry M with a medium T-land is also suitable for light and medium machining, but for carbon steel and stainless steels.

Finally, geometry FA has a sharp cutting edge and is particularly for machining non-ferrous metals. Its polished insert face reduces sticking of the machined material, promoting longer tool life and better workpiece finish quality.

Dormer Pramet has expanded its existing range of forming taps for standard thread forms MF, UNC and UNF, as well as adding taps with oil grooves and through coolant.

The Dormer forming taps are a dependable option when creating threads, offering both dynamic strength and high dimensional accuracy. The comprehensive program now includes designs and thread forms for the majority of applications and materials across all major industry segments.

The five new lines of forming taps, added as part of the company’s November 2016 launch, offer greater accuracy and produce a stronger thread than standard cutting taps with increased load bearing capabilities.

Manufactured from High Speed Cobalt (HSS-E), the taps provide lower surface roughness and a highly stable design, reducing the risk of breakage for added operational reliability.

Available with Titanium Nitride (TiN) or Titanium Carbon Nitride (TiCN) coatings, the taps thread profile generates low torque, reducing friction and ensuring a smooth surface finish. The chamfer geometry provides a better run-in and even wear, with options for blind and through-hole machining.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has launched a comprehensive program of solid carbide taps for machining hardened steels and other difficult to machine materials.

The use of hardened materials in industrial processes is becoming increasingly common, creating a greater need for cutting tools that can operate in extreme conditions.

To support this, Dormer Pramet has developed five new lines for threading depths up to 3xD under its Dormer brand.

The new carbide taps – identified by the T2xx designation – form part of the company’s second product launch of 2016.

Offering a high level of performance and productivity, the taps are recommended for machining hardened materials up to 63 HRC, providing high wear resistance and long tool life even at high speeds.

The T2xx range can support cutting speeds three times greater than HSS-E taps and, with a highly stable tool design, offers less risk of breakage.

The taps are available in a choice of straight flute and spiral flute geometries with either a Titanium Carbon Nitride (TiCN) or Super-B (TiAlN + WC/C) coating. Through coolant and forming tap options have also been added.
