Increased machine utilization for effective steel turning

For longitudinal and face turning, Sandvik Coromant introduces the new CoroTurn 300 for higher component quality, increased handling efficiency and longer tool life in steel turning operations. Available immediately, the CoroTurn 300 features stable insert clamping, as well as eight-edged inserts for the high chip control, tool life and surface finish.

Stable insert clamping for the CoroTurn 300 is made possible through the patented iLock™ interface. This system securely locks the insert in place to prevent cutting forces from affecting the tool position. iLock provides tool accuracy within ±0.05 mm (.002 inch) giving the operator indexing repeatability for a better surface finish and increased tool life.

The eight-edged inserts for the CoroTurn 300 are available in grades GC4325 and GC4315 featuring Inveio™ coating, a uni-directional crystal orientation for high wear resistance and long tool life. The unique insert design has excellent chip breaking capabilities and less carbide per edge, which reduces the impact on our environment with less material to waste or recycle. Plus more edges allows for better inventory control.

Another way the CoroTurn 300 offers chip breaking capabilities is through high-precision (HP) over and under coolant. Coolant from above controls the chip breaking for secure machining while under coolant controls the temperature for long and predictable tool life. Other features of the tool are the Coromant Capto interface in a variety of sizes and the Quick Start (QS) shanks which enable quick tool changes and easy coolant connections for maximized production time.

John Winter, turning product specialist for Sandvik Coromant, says, “The CoroTurn 300 integrates the latest advances in iLock, Inveio, and high-precision coolant technology to take steel turning into the next century using an insert with eight, 80 degree cutting edges. This is the perfect tool for high volume outer diameter (OD) steel turning applications where tool life and process security is a must.” Application specialist for general turning, Stefan Wernh, also states, “CoroTurn 300 is designed to achieve outstanding performance in a turning process and the handling efficiency maximizes the machine utilization.”

Sandvik Coromant unveils CoroTurn 107® with high-pressure, high-precision nozzles

Slender components present numerous challenges including long chips, vibration and deflection. As a result, tooling system specialist Sandvik Coromant is introducing HP high-precision coolant to its range of CoroTurn® 107 cutting units to minimize the risk of insert breakages, chip jamming and machine stoppages.

First choice tooling
CoroTurn 107 is the first choice for external and internal turning of small, long and slender components. Sharp cutting edges and excellent chip control ensure a soft cutting action and low cutting forces, providing excellent surface finish.

For use with new high-pressure Coromant Capto units, coolant pressure of up to 200 bar can now be applied (the pressure limit with standard Capto clamping is 80 bar). In combination with high-precision nozzles, the system offers benefits for the operator in that there are fewer problems with long chips, and advantages for the management team thanks to fewer production stops and improved tool life or higher cutting speed.

Multiple applications
Designed for wet turning operations, especially in HRSA (ISO S) and stainless steel materials (ISO M), the system works well in both high-volume and flexible production featuring mixed materials and/or batch sizes. Customers in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, energy and general engineering will benefit in all finishing to semi-finishing operations.

In total, 48 new items are being introduced across Coromant Capto coupling sizes C3 to C6, in CoroTurn 107 insert shapes C, D, R and V.

High precision nozzles put coolant pressure exactly where it’s required

Sandvik Coromant has announced that its CoroTurn® SL cutting heads now feature CoroTurn HP (high precision) nozzles that direct cutting fluid precisely where it is needed – at the exact interface between the tool and the workpiece. This innovation ensures CoroTurn SL users can be assured of reliable chip breaking, which facilitates both good chip evacuation and extended tool life in back-boring operations.

The extended product range offer includes cutting heads for coolant up to 70 bar pressure. Designed to suit back-boring operations with clearance between body and component, the heads are available in 25 and 40 mm sizes, to suit positive D and V style inserts.

CoroTurn® SL is a universal and modular system of adaptors with exchangeable cutting heads where customers can build customized tools for a variety of machining applications. The ingenious Serration Lock (SL) interface is extremely robust and lets users create a range of tool combinations from a small inventory of adaptors and cutting heads: just three bars and three heads allow up to nine different configurations. What’s more, CoroTurn SL cutting heads have four stages of offset up to 23 mm. This enables reach and the largest possible boring bar diameter, making it ideal for challenging operations in the aerospace and oil and gas industries, such as bottle boring (also called chamfer boring). Here, SL adaptors are ideal in combination with Silent Tools™ dampened boring bars for operations with long overhangs or vibration tendencies.

The CoroTurn HP fixed, pre-directed high precision nozzles featured on the new heads deliver parallel laminar jets of coolant with high velocity. While positive effects start at low coolant pressure, more demanding workpiece materials can be machined as the pressure climbs.

Ultimately, for efficient coolant delivery, Sandvik Coromant offers solutions all the way from the machine to the cutting edge, through clamping units, adaptors and holders – empowered of course by dedicated insert geometries.

The recently introduced CoroCut® QD concept for deep external grooving and parting off from Sandvik Coromant, now adds internal machining to the application range of these secure and reliable tools.

The CoroCut QD system from October 1st will include CoroTurn® SL blades for deep grooves in internal machining. The modularity of the CoroTurn SL interface enables tool assemblies to be optimized for the specific application.

Internal grooving and parting off with long overhangs require stability and tooling solutions that keep vibration to a minimum. The stable clamping mechanism on the CoroCut QD tools is now supported by the possibility to use Silent Tools™ dampened boring bars for vibration-free machining with long overhangs. For tube-shaped components, typically found in the oil and gas industry, this is welcome news enabling deep internal grooving to be machined with high process security.

As with the previously introduced CoroCut QD tools, the extended assortment features over- and under coolant. The over coolant takes care of chip control while the under coolant prolongs tool life, together further adding to securing the machining process.
