Dormer Pramet has launched a new generation of solid carbide multi-application drills to deliver a greater level of performance and economy.

Force X is the new family name given to the Dormer range of drills, which replaces its MPX assortment.

All existing product codes have been retained to ensure a smooth transition, but the incoming drills have received a significant upgrade, including new geometry, corner design and edge preparation.

The improvements apply to the 3xD R457 and R458 and the 5xD R453 and R454, bringing them in-line with the newly launched 8xD R459.

Retaining their Titanium Aluminium Nitride (TiAlN) coating, all drills continue to be suitable for use across a wide range of machines and materials, such as stainless steel, alloy steels, cast iron and non-ferrous materials. This makes the Force X range an ideal choice for general engineering and sub-contract environments.

Dormer Pramet 1As part of the enhancements, each of the Force X drills now include Continuously Thinned Web (CTW) technology, which provides a very strong web design, reducing thrust requirements during drilling.

They all feature a consistent edge preparation, protecting the cutting area and preventing premature chipping and flaking. A strong corner design across the range also increases stability and reduces the forces encountered when exiting the workpiece.

The micrograin carbide substrate, along with the TiAlN coating, offers high wear resistance and increased tool life, while the 140° split point geometry provides precise centering capabilities and low thrust forces.

Offering both solid and coolant feed options to improve cutting efficiency and swarf evacuation, the new Force X range offers high productivity and improved performance.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has launched new solid carbide spotting drills and pre-tapping drills.

Developed for fast and accurate spotting, the R6011 drill can be used in hydraulic and shrink fit holders when machining a range of work-piece materials. It offers 90° self-centering point geometry and TiAlN coating for increased tool life.

Providing a drill and chamfer in one, the R7131 reduces tool-cycle time and inventory. Available in specific pre-tapping sizes for metric threads, it includes coolant feed holes to improve swarf control and performance, while the TiAlN coating increases tool life.

The new Walter Titex DB133 Supreme solid carbide micro twist drills are the key to establishing precise, reliable working processes and achieving significantly longer tool life.

The use of grades WJ30EL and WJ30ER, developed by Walter specifically for micro drills, ensures that the drills exhibit superior wear resistance. In addition to this, the new cutting edge geometry increases process reliability, and optimised dimensions allow for maximum stability, even with the smallest drills. The incredibly uniform finish on the drill cutting edge and extremely tight tolerances ensure that the surface finish on the workpiece is exceptional. Thanks to the special flute geometry, the swarf is evacuated effectively, even without through coolant. This means that hole depths of up to 8 x Dc can be easily achieved.

The new solid carbide micro twist drills, with their 140° point geometry, can be used universally on many different materials in ISO material groups P, K and N. Diameters range from 0.5 to 2.95 mm. Oil or emulsion can be used as a coolant. This new drill design will be of particular interest to users in general mechanical engineering, mould and die making, the energy and automotive industries and any other areas where small diameter, deep holes, are required.

KOMET GROUP has recently developed draw bar tools which can be utilised for highly productive machine tools. They should not first be maintained when production quality decreases due to wear. When several different draw bar tools are used on a machine for manufacturing workpiece variants with differences in duration of use, it is easy to lose sight of each particular period of use. The duration of use can no longer be determined. As a result, it is also not be possible to draw conclusions about possible wear, and maintenance intervals cannot be determined in advance.

The new KomTronic® service indicator provides a remedy for this problem. It is located directly on the tool so that the user can read off the duration of use and the displacement travelled. In addition, digital recording of the operation times can be used to organise maintenance in strictly defined intervals.

A higher degree of production reliability and cost savings through timely maintenance of wear parts can be achieved as a result. Furthermore, compromises in component quality can be avoided.

The KomTronic® service indicator is an option that can be integrated in new and existing draw bar tools alike.

Seco completes its range of high-quality tooling systems with the recent launch of the EPB 5867 tapping chuck, which features an all-new micro-compensating mechanism for secure tapping with synchronous machines.

The mechanism’s built-in axial micro flexure of +/- 0.5 mm compensates for micro deviations between the spindle rotation, feed rate and tap pitch to eliminate tap stress and breakage. As a result, users achieve high-quality threads, especially in blind-hole tapping applications.

When compared with conventional non-compensated tapping chucks, the EPB 5867 significantly increases hole-tapping output and extends tool life by absorbing the axial stress that would otherwise transfer to the tap itself. Performance is also non-material dependent so users in all industry segments can benefit from maximum application versatility. The EPB 5867 accommodates HSK-A, DIN-AD, BT-AD, and Seco-Capto™ spindle interfaces, as well as combined Weldon/Whistle-Notch shanks or cylindrical shanks that can be mounted on many toolholders.

The range covers tap sizes M2 to M30 when using ER11, ER20, ER25 and ER40 tapping collets with square drive. The collet clamping nuts can also hold sealing rings to force coolant through taps with coolant channels. In addition to the EPB 5867, Seco’s range of tapping chucks includes EPB 5283 quick change tapping chucks with axial feed compensation for non-synchronous machines. EPB 5260 quick change tapping chucks and EPB 5865 ER tapping chucks are available for rigid synchronised tapping that is only possible with synchronous machines.

Some of the most sought after and high-end tools are manufactured right outside the financial capital of the country. Located around 30 kilometres away from Mumbai in Jawahar Industrial Estate, Navi Mumbai, Vora Industries has become well known name in the market.

“We believe in investing in technology. It has been our aim to deliver high end solution, and for that one needs to have the proper and latest technologies in place,” says Jainesh Vora, Director, Vora Industries. The company caters to some of the most demanding industries like aerospace, automotive, medical and energy, etc where the precision level is high.

Vora Industries has been a household name in the circuit since it was conceived in 1976. From its early years, the company showcased all the necessary requisites to become a global name. Not only does the company boasts of having an extensive R&D department, but also is backed by an experience of more than 30 years coupled with the latest, most demanding and complex materials used for machining.

“Customer satisfaction is our priority, and to fulfill the demand of the growing industry we needed tool presetter, a proper inspection machine,” says Jainesh.

There are various domestic and global companies who still prefer using the conventional method rather than opting for a proper tool measuring machine. This at times affects the customers’ productivity and their own production time.

“We were facing some problems in terms of getting the correct dimension. Our quality and inspection department used to put in lot of time inspecting the tool without getting the correct dimension. Since we cater to a diverse set of industries, we needed very special tools. To get the perfect dimension we were looking for the perfect solution,” he says.

All Vora Industries was looking for was a perfect tool-measuring machine that would help them save time and most importantly provide a perfect dimension.

“It was during IMTEX 2010, where I came across the Speroni machine. I personally visited their stall and met a German Executive from Speroni. He explained various aspects of the machine. The application and quality of the machine were convincing and as we were already looking for the perfect solution, we went ahead and bought it soon.”

Understanding the Benefits
Vora industries bought the unique STP Esperia that represents the ideal solution for modern days measuring and tool presetting needs. The Esperia line of tool presetters embodies over 45 years of experience in the manufacturing of high quality tool presetting and measuring equipment.

“Once we installed the machine, our cycle time for inspecting the tool went down drastically. Previously we required two machines in order to inspect the tool. At time our inspection department tried to measure the tool by vernier or gauges, but would never get the correct reading. With the use of STP Esperia we can check the dimension, angle, length, depth and diameter as well as the runout at one go,” avers Jainesh.

speroni voraThe machine is equipped with different helpful features, for example the rapid axis movement has been designed to maximise the ease to use the system, the operator can move the axis simultaneously/ independently, not only this, the precision ground integrated spindle calibration edge helps fast and easy recalibration edge for the fast and easy recalibration of the system. Apart from that, it is equipped with state-of-the-art Schneeberger guideways, quick-change adapter system allows the changing of adopters in less than 8 seconds assuring unmatched precision and accuracy, etc among others.

Talking about the benefits, Jainesh says, “The overall experience with Speroni has been very good, we have understood the benefits as it has helped us enhance accuracy of our tools while cutting down on the time taken during production & inspection. The accuracy of the machine is within three microns and reputability is always the same.”

One of the key features of ESPERIA is that it suits the Indian manufacturers. It can function in any environment.

“No matter where we keep this machine and what the temperature is (though we keep always keep it under 18 degree), it functions smoothly. We have used this machine in other departments as well where there was no air conditioning and still the machine provided the same accuracy,” says Jainesh.

Realising the full Potential
Vora Industries has a product line up to cater to all kind of cutting operations, such as milling program, drilling program, reaming program, special tools under the brand name of SPEED Pro. Today, manufacturers from around the world look up to SPEED Pro as an integral part in their processes. One can find SPEED Pro’s solid carbide tools in manufacturing plants around the world, where they are used in industries as diverse as aerospace, automotive, and plastic and composite components.

Jainesh says, “We use this STP Esperia for all kind of tools. This machine really measure ballnose accuracy to great length and gives the correct picture, not all the machines available in the market can provide such accuracy. We have customers in medical implant sector an aerospace industry, where the demand is for the tool is very precise. I am happy to say that our customers are happy with our products. There were few complaints from the customers regarding dimensions earlier, but after buying STP Esperia complains are negligible.”

Special Case
In last two years, Vora Industries has developed lot of new products for industries like medical implant, aerospace and automobile industry where the requirement is very different, as the material and geometry changes in order to develop high-end tools.

Recalling a special case Jainesh says, “We developed a very niche product for Bosch, Germany. This tool was supposed to be very accurate with at least 12 step length on the tool. The tool diameters were ranging from 3mm to 30mm and the accuracy required for this was extreme. But the machine helped us to do the job without a hitch. We finished the operation and saved time on production too. I would say it would have impossible without the help of Speroni machine.”

After Sales and Service
Sales service plays a major role when a manufacturer purchases a machine. To address to its customers, Speroni always takes an extra effort. They send their engineer to the customer’s factory to train them and come back only if after the operator is confident. Apart from this they continuously visit them to provide time-to-time training.

“For such high-end machines, customers are always worried about the after sales service and spare parts. I appreciate Speroni’s work in India, the team here has helped us import the spare parts within a week and installed the parts on time. Not only this, they have experienced service engineers across India to help the customers. I really appreciate their effort for training our operators to maintain the machine, operate, inspect, etc. Generally, we got a week’s training from others, but Speroni provided almost 30 days of training,” says Jainesh.

Building Confidence
If a tool is not in the right geometry, the overall job’s performance would be different and later affects the productivity of the customer.

“What was important for us was to attain the accuracy to measure the geometry of the tool. The quantum was not important but the quality was,” he says.

More than anything it helped the operator/ engineers at Vora Industries become more confident in what they do. They are now confident about the correct dimensions of their product.
