BIG KAISER, a global leader in premium high-precision tooling systems and solutions for the metal-working industries, has today announced the SW Smart Damper – a rough boring head with a built-in anti-vibration mechanism.

The new twin-cutter head for rough boring makes it easy to create deep bores in iron or steel quickly, quietly and without vibration or chatter. This means that faster machining and higher productivity are possible than ever before, thus saving the customer money.

The SW Smart Damper can operate at cutting speeds of up to 200 m/min in steel at a length of 8xD (ratio tool length / diameter) without chattering. This is four times faster than the 50 m/min maximum chatterless cutting speed attainable without the SW Smart Damper.

BIG KAISER has achieved this breakthrough thanks to a patented construction design, consisting of a metal body with special rubber dampers inside, and importantly with no oil required. If the bar vibrates, the metal weights, or friction dampers, compensate for these vibrations by adjusting their position, with every component free to move independently.

Moreover, the SW Smart Damper can perform two roughing operations without needing to change any components. One is for high speed operations (inserts are of the same diameter and length) and the other is utilized for high stock removal tasks (inserts are assembled with a diameter and height offsets). This is made possible by the tool body providing perfectly stable supports for insert holders of varying heights and lengths.

“Our innovated and patented oil-free SW Smart Damper brings unparalleled production speeds to the world of vibration-free boring,” says Peter Elmer, CEO at BIG KAISER. “This new addition to our already comprehensive family of boring tools will allow our customers to do more in less time, hence increase their production and save money.”

Together with this new SW Smart Damper, BIG KAISER also offers a wide range of smart damper products, each featuring an integrated damping system to eliminate chattering. This includes a precision EWD boring head with a digital display, and a whole range of tools for turning, boring and milling tasks.

BIG KAISER, a global leader in premium high-precision tooling systems and solutions for the metal-working industries, launches the world’s smallest hydraulic chuck for HSK-E25 machine spindles, thus completing its extensive range of BIG KAISER Super Slim hydraulic chucks.

The Super Slim type of Hydraulic Chucks (HDC) are the perfect tool holders for precision finishing processes in confined areas with drills, reamers, ball mills, end mills, diamond reamers and grinding tools. The wide variety of clamping diameters and projections are ideally suited for practically all applications in the automotive, aerospace, medical, die & mold segments.

BIG KAISER designed the Super Slim HDC to require only a single wrench for clamping and unclamping. These chucks can clamp ultra small mills and drills directly, without needing a reduction sleeve, down to a diameter of 3mm. When clamping diameters of 3mm, the external diameter of the chuck nose is a mere 14mm, and at a length of 90 mm the diameter is 25 mm – meaning that interference contours should no longer pose a problem.

“Our HSK-E25 tool holder lineup now includes BIG KAISER’s high precision, low runout, hydraulic chucks,” says Peter Elmer, CEO of BIG KAISER. “These ultra-precise hydraulic chucks, with their extremely slim design, are perfectly suited for high precision finish milling work on ultra-high speed spindles on machines with small work envelopes.”

BIG KAISER is continuing down the path of digital tooling innovation with the introduction of the EWD EVO, a digital boring head designed with a single goal in mind—making the life of an operator as easy as possible. It will be synched with the new BIG KAISER smartphone and tablet app, which was developed to enhance user friendliness while assembling and running BIG KAISER boring tools. Not only will users be able to read the cutting diameter change, but the app will also help operators determine optimal cutting parameters from their tool assemblies. The app will also log historical adjustments for all tools ever synched with it, a critical piece for shops joining the smart manufacturing movement.

BIG KAISER’s parent company, BIG Daishowa Seiki, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016, and will be showcasing many new innovations around the globe this year. One is the expansion of the Smart Damper series of tool holders, which now includes a solution that can be applied to lathe applications. The Smart Damper boring bar features three modular insert holders, optimized for I.D. turning with common inserts.

The HSK-E25 lineup of tool holders is also expanding to now include BIG Daishowa’s high precision, low runout Hydraulic Chucks. Available in Ø3 and Ø4mm clamping diameters, these holders are the perfect solution for precision finish milling work on ultra-high speed spindles on machines with small work envelopes.

These new Hydraulic Chucks will be shown in action at booth W-1600 on one of the two machining centers at BIG KAISER’s booth. The 5-Axis GF Microlution 5100-S will be fully operational, and equipped with a 50,000 RPM HSK-E25 spindle, loaded with precision micro milling, engraving and drilling tools from Sphinx – including the new 80xD micro drill.

The Speroni Futura has undergone a significant enhancement with the introduction of pneumatic quick-change spindle adapters. To switch spindle adapters, the current design requires manual locking/unlocking of the spindle, which can be cumbersome and requires two hands. Now, with the touch of a button, the pneumatic quick-change system allows for fast, easy, one-handed exchange of adapters.

The focus at IMTS for BIG KAISER’s Unilock Zero-Point workholding will be the plethora of new multi-axis workholding solutions. The new modular solutions locate and stabilize workpieces without obstructing access to the sides and top of the part. They also allow a clamped workpiece to be flipped into new orientations for subsequent operations without unclamping it.

BIG KAISER, a leader in premium high-precision tooling systems and solutions for the aerospace, automotive, energy, medical and watch-making industries, today announced the AG90 Light Weight Type with BT30 (BIG-PLUS) taper, a fixed 90-degree angle head.

Part of the BIG KAISER family of angle heads, new AG90 Light Weight Type weighs less than 2kg. This makes it one of the lightest angle heads in the world, and it is therefore compatible with the automatic tool change of small machines.

By allowing vertical, horizontal and angular operations without repositioning the workpiece, BIG KAISER angle heads increase accuracy and productivity. Being able to use just a single set-up, and to easily change the angle of the cutter over a 360 degree range, speeds up production and eliminates errors due to multiple set-ups.

Angle heads enable users to benefit from new capabilities without replacing their current machining center, saving the cost of a new machine.

“The new AG90 combines advanced design features and high quality components, while keeping its weight down to the absolute minimum,” says Peter Elmer, CEO of BIG KAISER. “It complements our existing range of angle heads, which enable customers to find the right solution for almost any application.”

The AG90’s compact design minimizes overhang, which adds rigidity and strength. The minimized overhang also helps to eliminate interference with the ATC and adjacent storage pockets in the tool magazine.

An advanced non-contact seal prevents coolant and particle contamination better than other sealing methods. A unique coolant jacket efficiently directs coolant coming through the stop block to the tool cutting edge, while simultaneously cooling the angle head.

To minimize noise and vibration, the AG90 is made from superior quality components, including hardened and ground chrome-nickel steel spiral bevel gears, super precision hardened and ground spindles, and high precision angular contact ball bearings.

BIG KAISER provides many different types of angle heads such as the AG90 family for milling and drilling or the AGU30 with adjustable angle. In addition, numerous special options can be ordered, and the angle head is available in a wide range of tapers, lengths and designs.

The AG90 Lightweight Type is available now.
