The negative NRM turning chip breaker is for roughing and semi-roughing of stainless steel and low alloy steel. Launched under the company’s Pramet brand, NRM is available for both double-sided and large single-sided inserts.

It has been designed for continuous and mass levels of production, offering consistent performance and high feeds. However, the NRM has excellent chip-breaking properties and can also be used for roughing of stainless steel even at lower feeds, without the risk of work hardening.

Its positive geometry with a wide T-land offers a broad depth of cut and promotes good chip evacuation in a wide number of applications. The chip breaker is available in grades T7325, T7335 and T9315.

The NRM enhances Pramet’s existing range of turning chip breakers for stainless steel, including the NMR for medium to roughing operations, NM for medium turning and NF for finishing to medium turning.

In a recent test, machining M group material DIN 1.4301, the NRM on the CNMG insert with T7335 grade, achieved a 60% longer tool life than a competitor equivalent.

Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has developed a new chip breaker for bar peeling of stainless steel, steel and super alloys.

Suitable for roughing to finishing operations, the MM chip breaker has been designed with a wide, strong T-land to offer increased stability of the cutting edge.

This gives the Pramet chip breaker good chip control with an even spread of the cutting forces, making it suitable for high feeds in heavy conditions.

There are three cutting edge options: S01 is for hard materials, S02 for medium hardness and S03 have a stabilized facet on the main cutting edge for soft materials.

The MM chip breaker is available for use with the LNGF inserts, for roughing to finishing, RNGH inserts for roughing and WNGF inserts for roughing to finishing. It is suitable for use with the grades T7325, T9315 and T6310.

As well as being pleasing to the eye, highly polished flutes and gash surfaces improve chip evacuation and significantly improve tool performance and life. The smoother surface enables swarf (or chips) to exit more freely, preventing chip packing and material build up during machining.

ANCA is well known in the industry for its rigid grinding machines and has combined this with its sister company, ANCA Motion’s, LinX linear motor technology. Tools ground on our machines have a consistently high-quality cutting edge and surface finish. Since the product was launched customers have reported dramatically better results using the duel technologies.

Simon Richardson, ANCA Product Manager explained: “When machining softer or ductile materials, chips can stick to the carbide. If the chips created are not removed faster than they are being produced – the tool may not perform effectively. However, a better surface finish on the flute prevents the swarf from sticking onto the flute face of the tool while reducing the amount of heat that is generated when machining.”

“We realised that having a highly rigid machine with a cylindrical linear motor that boasts a smooth axis movement, would greatly improve the final surface finish on the tool. The research and development team conducted many hours of test grinding to rigorously test our assumption of what surface finish quality we thought was possible.”

An Alicona infinite focus XL metrology machine in ANCA’s Grinding Centre of Excellence was used to verify the results to Nano metre accuracy finding that a surface finish roughness average as low as 164.7nm (which translates to 0.16 Ra) was achieved.

Paul Bocchi, General Manager of ANCA Motion said: “An advantage of knowing ANCA’s customers so intimately is that we could immediately see how our technology would work seamlessly to improve performance.”

“The LinX cylindrical linear motors ensure there is no loss of preload or rigidity when grinding tools. As well as that, reversal errors are eliminated and higher contouring accuracy can be maintained due to a control algorithm we use which is unique to ANCA.”

Simon concluded: “Tools with highly polished surfaces means better cutting edges which will ensure extended tool life and improve the finish on the machined part. We have seen the demand for tools with a superior surface finish continue to increase and cutting tool manufacturers are producing more highly polished tools in larger quantities.”

Tips on achieving a superior tooling surface finish

  • The quality of the grinding wheel is critical in achieving a high-quality surface finish. A fine-grit wheel can form small chips during grinding which could impart fine marks on the flute face and gash.
  • Using a fine-grit also poses a challenge as the wheel must be fine enough to produce the required surface finish while maintaining a good toroid radius over a batch of tools.
  • Ensure the wheel is properly trued and dressed so that it performs as expected.
  • Ensure efficient coolant delivery and fine filtration systems are in place.
  • Ensure the grinding wheels are balanced correctly using iBalance

New intelligent process control software for Renishaw’s Equator gauging system https://mfgtechupdate.com/new-intelligent-process-control-software-renishaws-equator-gauging-system/ https://mfgtechupdate.com/new-intelligent-process-control-software-renishaws-equator-gauging-system/#respond Fri, 12 May 2017 09:39:23 +0000 https://mfgtechupdate.com/old//?p=11573 The Renishaw Equator flexible gauge is now offered with IPC (intelligent process control) software, providing the functionality to fully automate tool offset updates in CNC manufacturing processes. The Renishaw Equator flexible gauge is now offered with IPC (intelligent process control) software, providing the functionality to fully automate tool offset updates in CNC manufacturing processes. Improved capability in precision part machining, reduced setting and process adjustment time, and integration with automation systems are some of the benefits that users can now expect.

IPC is used with the existing software running on the Equator controller, using recent historical gauging data to determine process corrections. Connection to a compatible machine tool can be as simple as connecting an Ethernet cable from the Equator to a CNC machine. This capability has already been used by Renishaw customers worldwide to achieve considerable performance gains across a wide variety of industries, applications and CNC machine types, including lathes, machining centres and highly automated machining cells.

Controlling processes with frequent gauging

The new IPC software allows constant monitoring and adjustment of a machining operation, keeping part dimensions close to nominal and well within process control limits. This means that any process drift is quickly corrected, improving part quality and manufacturing capability, along with reducing scrap. The proximity of the Equator gauge to the CNC process allows rapid measurement and process adjustment at the point of manufacture, avoiding time delays or relying on finished part (tailgate) inspection.

The IPC software can average results across several parts to determine the true process mean for adjustment of each cutting tool. For process control purposes, it is usual that only one machined feature per tool offset will require gauging, as compared to many features for typical Quality Assurance (QA) applications. The frequency and control of offset updates can be configured on a feature by feature basis depending on design tolerances, process variation and tool wear rates.

Reduce dependence on skilled operators

The ability to correct a process automatically with IPC software eliminates the potential for manual data entry errors and removes the requirement for an expert to decipher traditional measurement reports into a process correction value at the CNC machine.

One-to-one or One-to-many – update multiple machines from one Equator gauge

An Equator gauging system can be connected to one or multiple CNC machine tools, so that parts from different machines can be gauged on one Equator, with the offset updates being sent to the corresponding machine (part / machine identification is required). Connection to multiple machines requires an Ethernet hub or is via an existing factory network. Closed loop unmanned process control of a cell of machines is possible and a key requirement when used in conjunction with factory automation systems.

Intelligent process control of cutting tools

Options within the IPC software can constantly monitor the process and detect excessive tool offset update values, indicating tool failure or high rates of wear, and automatically signal to the machine that the tool needs changing.

Where IPC software is of benefit

IPC software has proven to be particularly useful for conventional CNC lathes or Swiss-style sliding head machines where integration of a conventional machine tool probing system may be difficult due to machine configuration or tool station availability. Using the Equator gauging system is also beneficial where measurement due to feature access or size would be difficult to undertake on the machine tool. Also, the use of off-machine gauging and IPC as a parallel activity is the preferred solution where minimum machining cycle time is a critical requirement.

IPC compatibility

The first release of the new IPC software allows connection to one or multiple machine tools, with direct Ethernet links from the Equator Controller to Fanuc, Mazak and Okuma CNC controls.

Fanuc controls that have been tested and proven include the 0i, 30i, 31i and 32i, with the Focas2 option installed.

Mazak controls currently supported are the Smooth X, Smooth G, Matrix2 and Matrix controls with the Mazak API installed.

The Okuma OSP300L and OSP300M controls are supported, on machines with the Thinc API installed.

Future software releases will further increase CNC control compatibility.

The versatile gauge

The Equator gauging system is unique in its design and method of operation, and has already changed the thinking of thousands of production engineers, making it their gauge of choice. The versatility and repeatability that Equator offers is re-defining the world of gauging and, now available with IPC software, it offers an even wider range of capabilities to manufacturers globally.

CGTech will introduce its Additive Manufacturing (AM) simulation capabilities at the RAPID + TCT Show, May 9 -11. VERICUT’s Additive module simulates both additive and traditional machining capabilities of hybrid CNC machines.

CGTech works with its customers and technology partners to solve AM challenges including: accurate laser cladding and material deposition, detecting collisions between the machine and additive part, and finding errors, voids, and misplaced material.

“Additive Manufacturing applications create new possibilities for manufacturers,” said Gene Granata, VERICUT Product Manager. “Adding this technology to VERICUT provides unique solutions that address the needs of our customers in the rapidly expanding AM market.”

Scheduled for release in early fall, VERICUT 8.1 adds the ability to identify potential problems that can occur when integrating additive methods. Simulation uses the same post-processed NC code used to drive the CNC machine. Users can virtually experiment with combining additive and metal removal processes to determine optimal safe hybrid machining production methods.

“This gives our customers a competitive edge to redefine current production technology,” said Granata. “VERICUT’s realistic simulation of the entire hybrid process enables customers to verify the part will be built correctly, without causing damage to the part, machine, or expensive laser equipment.”

Please tell us more about LMT Tools , its product range and innovations…
LMT Tools is based out of Oberkochen, Germany.  It is a family owned small and medium enterprise.  As a group we have four principle brands LMT Fette, LMT  Kieninger, LMT  Onsrud & LMT Belin. Two of these brands come from Germany, one from France and one from the US.

The products we are concentrating on are niche and highly focused in specific areas.  e.g. the products manufactured in Fette at Schwarzenbek, close to Hamburg are essentially the tools which go to produce gears .  Under this brand LMT Fette, today we are ranked amongst the top 2 or 3 global companies and within Europe, we are certainly the No. 1 supplier of hobs for this application.  In this product program, we have the complete range in both materials and modules-  starting from powder metallurgy steel to solid carbide to the indexable version and  from Module-1 to almost up to Module-50.  In short, it’s not just the automotive industry that we cater to, but also general engineering and Energy sectors. To give you an insight into the various developments and innovative initiatives of the group, our Speedcore, probably stands out – essentially this has come out of the advances made in the material science in combination with variety of its heat treatment and coating apart from our manufacturing technology making it unique. This product is able to achieve attractive speeds and feeds substantially higher than any other competitor in this classification thereby ensuring the productivity for the customer is always met

The other product line that comes out of LMT Fette is the unique Thread Rolling System where we certainly claim the pole position globally.  Here, we have set the benchmark for range and applications and are the preferred suppliers to many internationally acclaimed end users.

If I move down the third line which comes out of LMT Fette, it would be the Round Tools in the field of High feed milling and special Solid Carbide End-mills for the aerospace industry and the medical industry where the product is carving a name for itself.

Moving on to the LMT Kieninger range of products you will get to see the complex tools which are predominantly used in production of automotive industry specially –

  • line boring bars which are needed to produce Crank and Cam bores-
  • Cylinder boring bars
  • Tools to produce spherical shapes.

We are easily among the top three suppliers of these tools and are working closely with most of the machine tools manufacturers and end-users. We have a reputed list of customers from the machine tool industry and end users, mainly German companies like BMW, Daimler and Volkeswagen amongst others.

We have managed to share the same technology with quite a few companies in India, Renault for example, have been testing our products and are quite happy with it. We have also supplied to Cummins, TATA and Ashok Leyland being our  principle customers.

Moving on to other brands- LMT Belin, we have a range of reaming tools which involves high precision and our manufacturing technology from this French company stands out in the product. Our other range of product is LMT Onsrud, where we supply predominantly to the aerospace industry -so for machining of composites, honeycombs and host of other applications, especially for exotic material like Inconel, Onsrud range does a brilliant job.

Can you please explain about the Indian operation?
We have the manufacturing base in Chakan, Pune where we produce hobs and catering to the Indian automotive industry from motor-cycles and scooters all the way up to cars and have graduated including trucks and tractors.  We are expanding the manufacturing programme to round tools and gradually we will be moving into other tools as well, as and when we see the necessity. The reach and go to market approach has given us lot of confidence having established Centers of competence for gear cutting, milling, tapping and thread rolling – here we have most of our engineers trained in Germany, thereby ensuring we offer performance solutions to the customers in sync with what they exactly want.

Tell us more about your R&D activities. What percent of your revenue goes into R&D?
As a group we believe in constantly innovating. We intend to constantly bring out something new every year in the respective areas we are operating. For example right through last year we introduced a totally new product in the field of gear cutting. We brought in the CarbideLine, SpeedCore and ChamferCut.   As for   motion tools from Kieninger range, we have been constantly innovating to come up with   new geometries and new special designs – “Copy max2”   to ensure that the  customer always benefits.  So to answer your question, the group spends an average of 4-5% of the revenue on R&D.  Each of these individual companies have their own engineering teams and development centres. There is one coordinating head from Schwarzenbek who ensures that we are all constantly listening to what customer wants, be it from the emerging markets of China and India or the matured markets of Europe and America.

L-R: Ramakant Reddy, MD, LMT (India) Pvt Ltd; S Venkatasubramanian, President, LMT USA; Mahadev Joshi, Joint MD, LMT (India) Pvt Ltd

What are the new technological up-gradations coming in?
We have worked on two areas.  When it comes to carbide technology we have been working closely with our carbide suppliers to ensure that the latest trends are provided for us depending on the application like steel, cast iron or stainless steel or exotic materials. For example, what we are doing with respect to Aerospace industry, we have come up with very very latest generation materials, but that apart we have our own in-house coating team which is constantly working towards new ranges of coatings to be brought in,  e.g., nano-mold, nano-spehere etc.  Now coating by and large is not enough on its own.  We have also developed substantial technology from manufacturing perspective especially with respect to edge rounding and de-burring and host of other areas, thereby ensuring that the advancements we make both in the substrate and coating is translated and easily brought on to the  material. If one visits our plant in Pune or anywhere in the world, you will get to see these little, specific advancements in manufacturing technology that have been made thereby ensuring our claim of substantial benefit with respect to the product when it reaches the customer.

Now everyone is talking about green machining and industry 4.0 and technology like IOT. Where does LMT stand?
In most of these areas, we are working closely on Industry 4.0.  Back home in Germany which is where most of these technologies are introduced, our team is working closely with the universities, colleges and the leading companies and we are part of the group with which we try to ensure that as and when such progress is made it gets translated. So if and when a particular market is beginning to see and show demand for such things, we are one of the few, who will not be left behind. We are very much participating in most of these activities; for example,  if you ask me one of the things which you see here whether it is part of Industry 4.0 or not, some of our thread rolling system we have 3D printed covers.  So things like that have started coming in. So we are able to turn around pretty fast, when customer wants something which is highly customised. To sum it when the progress is made at the market end, we are certainly not caught unaware.

What are the challenges that you face in India?
Being a highly price sensitive market, the basic challenges are always there because most of our products are imported. So we have to necessarily combat with the additional cost associated with importing and the duties amongst others.  The speed with which we are able to bring it in is also a struggle for us.  So our time to market becomes a little more constrained.  We are trying to overcome this challenge by manufacturing it locally and making the products cost competitive. We are now confident that the challenge of producing such high end precision tools exactly to our stringent German and global standards can be overcome thanks to our experience over the past three years

But most of your competitors are also producing in India.
Exactly.  So which is why I am saying when we started producing gear hobs, we have been able to distinctly show that we are able to retain the technology which is produced in Germany and at the same time offered to the customers with the cost competitiveness of products produced in India and in short the customer gets the best of technology and best of price.

What is your strategy to enhance or increase your market share in India?
One simple answer would be, the centres of competence.  In this matrix structure of sales and product specialists who form the centres of competence, we aim to ensure a right blend throughout the sales process.  The sales engineers or sales teams are well qualified to identify the opportunities and the likely pains the customer is facing then the specialists from centres of competence would step in quickly to give the right solution and   therefore, the customer is able to quickly see the benefits and features which we have – both from the knowledge and the product – by this approach we should be able to gain substantial penetration.  We started this exercise in the first half of last year and we have already begun to see sizeable traction in the fourth quarter of last year.

What are the emerging sectors in India?
We see aerospace gaining quite a bit of importance and with our strong program we find ourselves very much relevant in that sector. The medical industry is another one that is gaining greater amount of importance. Within the Energy sector we have seen some resurgence in the Wind Energy and the need for newer technologies. Within automotive sector itself, with the advent of the latest generation of machines coming in, we are beginning to see sizeable interest in the new generation cutting tools – for example in gear production, the manufacturers having brought in latest technology machines which has a high throughput – so we have had to step in to give them the latest range of tools to meet the expectations of both machine and customer.

Your future plans in India…
We plan to expand our manufacturing base in India adding the new products to our manufacturing program. And we aim to increase our market share with the focused approach already explained.

  • New design enables 6D deep drilling with excellent chip control
  • Ideal for automobile, aviation and medical device industries

Kyocera Corporation (President: Hideo Tanimoto) announced today that it has developed a new line of indexable modular drills, Magic Drill DRV, to be used mainly for hole drilling in the machine tool business. Ideally suited for the automobile, aviation and medical device industries, the new indexable drills combine a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coated insert on the outer edge and a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coated insert on the inner edge for the first time, enabling high-speed and high-efficiency processing.

The uniquely developed chipbreakers have improved chip evacuation and the holder’s thicker center core provides enhanced rigidity. Consequently, the new drill is now capable of deep drilling up to 6D (six times the holder diameter) for the first time. Kyocera aims to contribute to its customers’ increased productivity by broadening its product lineup to meet more diversified needs.

Development Background

Reduced weight and greater functionality of components are currently being promoted in the automobile, aviation and medical device industries. This trend increases the demand for products that enable high-speed and high-efficiency drilling of various workpiece materials under diversified drilling conditions. With previous indexable drills, PVD-coated chipbreakers were adopted for both the outer and inner edges, which has the disadvantage of increased wear and tear on the outer edge because it comes into contact with the workpiece material at a higher speed. To solve the problem, this new model adopts a CVD-coated chipbreaker with heat and wear resistance for the outer edge and a PVD-coated chipbreaker for the inner edge so that stable processing can be achieved even if a strong force is applied to the inner edge. In this manner, by making use of the features of both CVD and PVD coatings, high-speed and high-efficiency processing become feasible.

Product Feature

1) High-speed and high-efficiency processing of various materials

With an optimum chipbreaker selected from the four types available, the Magic Drill DRV series is capable of working with a variety of workpiece materials. The chipbreakers are designed so that four corners (edges) can be used, thereby reducing the customer’s processing costs.

2) Unique cutting edge enables excellent evacuation of drilled chips even in deep drilling – 33% increase of holder center core and drilling hole up to 6D

The outer edge has a “U-shaped” design to evacuate drilled chips easily and prevent the chips from clogging; and the inner edge has a “spoon-shaped” design to reduce frictional resistance during evacuation of drilled chips, thus enabling excellent evacuation of drilled chips. With this design, it becomes possible to form the flute (groove) into an optimum shape and increase thickness of the holder center core by approximately 33 percent compared with competitors’ products*1. Through the achievement of high rigidity and low resistance, the new model is capable of drilling a deep hole up to 6D, which has never been possible with a conventional indexable drill.

New GLOBAL S CMM Offers Advanced Solutions for Enhanced Productivity

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence today announced the release of the GLOBAL S measuring solution, the first in an Enhanced Productivity Series (EPS) leveraging the Hexagon portfolio of smart technologies including user experience adaptations, enhanced software and advanced eco-friendly options. The EPS utilises these technologies to simplify tasks related to the creation, execution and analysis of measurement routines. This initiative offers a complete package to the quality engineer creating the measurement routine, the operator executing the inspection and the quality manager analysing the data that will be used to improve processes in the production workflow. The GLOBAL S is the ideal solution for all operations requiring higher productivity in dimensional inspection, like the automotive, aerospace, general and precision manufacturing industries.

PC-DMIS software enhancements allow common tasks such as the selection of probe tips and the import of files to take place three- to eight-times faster than existing solutions. Further improvements such as feature sensor mapping allow the user to associate sensors to features faster when importing inspection plans. The GLOBAL S with Chrome precision level utilises the coordinate measuring machine’s (CMM’s) hardware enhancements to offer superior accuracy at the highest scanning speed. Operators benefit from faster scanning measurement of both predefined and non-predefined paths and optimised path trajectories for faster part-program execution. Using the eco-friendly feature, Eco Mode+, there is a 90% reduction in compressed air consumption when the machine is in idle state. The CMM solution can save up to 25% of compressed air cost under machine standard operating conditions.

GLOBAL S operators will benefit from the new PC-DMIS Inspect option for program selection and execution. This easy-to-use interface within PC-DMIS allows the operator ‘one click’ measurement routine selection. Automated solutions are also provided, ensuring reliable integrations and efficient data flow management. Messaging lights and the ergonomic jogbox provide an enhanced operator experience. Machine alerts regarding temperature, humidity, vibrations, and unexpected stoppage are also available via the PULSE monitoring system.

“The launch of the GLOBAL S is another step towards the future of smart manufacturing,” said Ingo Lindner, Global Product Line Manager, Stationary CMMs at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. “Utilising our smart quality products, we can now enable advanced data flow management and at-a-glance data visualisation that delivers the robust digital thread that quality managers need to drive productivity and profitability goals.”

The GLOBAL S is available via local Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence commercial operations and dealers.

SORALUCE presents the new TA-M turning-milling centre, a multi-tasking solution aimed at maximising productivity, with the ability to carry out milling and turning operations on a single machine, offering great machining capabilities and functions.

The machine responds to multi-tasking and versatility requirements, maximising productivity and minimising the time to prepare a part. In this regard, the new SORALUCE TA-M multifunctional fixed bed reduces the number of clamps required, minimising both cycle times and potential errors. This model was designed to respond to the machining needs of various high demand components.

The ability to carry out different machining processes efficiently and accurately, including turning, milling, boring, drilling and threading, are part of its identifying features. To do this, the machine is equipped with a table for milling and turning in two variants of Ø 1000 or Ø 1250 mm and a new SORALUCE H200T multifunctional head for turning and milling operations. The H200T head is equipped with an innovative rotational locking system for the chuck, making it possible to use both milling and turning tools directly without the need for intermediate elements.

The machine has 1250 mm of travel vertically and 1200 mm across and has a capacity for parts of up to 8000 kg for milling and 2000 kg for turning in a range of speeds of 6 ÷ 400 rpm.

Designed to provide maximum stability, its high level of torque power (28 kW / 479 Nm) makes it possible to carry out roughing operations with a great depth of cut. The structural elements are made entirely of cast iron, a material appreciated for its good intrinsic qualities in terms of stability and internal damping capacity.

Being compact and ergonomic, it stands out for its accessibility to the work area, with access from the front and rear to facilitate the set-up of parts and measuring operations, as well as monitoring the operation of the machine.

The SORALUCE TA-M multifunctional centre offers the user all of the technology developed by SORALUCE aimed at improving precision and productivity, such as Accura Heads, Adaptive Control and SSV, the latter being a development which makes it possible to prevent the regenerative effect of certain chatter conditions during the destabilisation process.

The new SORALUCE TA-M completes the wide range of SORALUCE multifunctional machines: FMT milling and turning centre with a 4000 x 1250 mm fixed table and a Ø 1600 mm integrated milling and turning table, highly configurable mobile column multifunctional centres (F range) with milling and turning tables and multifunctional gantry milling machines (P range).

SORALUCE has extensive experience in vertical milling, boring and turning, being acknowledged by its customers for the quality of its service and the high reliability, high performance, flexibility and advanced technology of its solutions, always aimed at improving efficiency and productivity.
